Ashley Du Preez: Kaizer Chiefs in dilemma over misfiring striker

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly not yet made a final decision regarding the future of struggling striker Ashley du Preez, despite increasing speculation that he may be on his way out of the club.

Du Preez endured a difficult season, failing to score a single goal. His last successful strike dates back to April 2025, and he has since played 19 matches without finding the back of the net, 13 of which were in the 2025-26 campaign.

With his confidence seemingly at a low ebb, talk of a move away from Naturena has intensified, suggesting a fresh start could be beneficial. His former club, Stellenbosch FC, have been linked as a potential destination, but any transfer is complicated by his contract, which has another year remaining.

Da Cruz to decide Du Preez’s fate?

The arrival of new head coach Fernando da Cruz adds another layer to the situation. Da Cruz will likely want to conduct his own player assessments before sanctioning any departures, after reviewing the performance reports provided to him.

For Du Preez, who turns 29 in July, the upcoming season is crucial. A strong performance is needed to prevent his market value from declining further. According to KickOff, discussions between the player and the club have taken place but they have been inconclusive.

Poor form of Kaizer Chiefs strikers

The club’s dilemma is compounded by the poor form of its other attacking options during the 2025/26 season. Tashreeq Morris and Etiosa Ighodaro managed only one goal each, with Ighodaro’s debut season hampered by injuries. Khanyisa Mayo, who scored just twice, is set to return to his parent club, CR Belouizdad.

This leaves Flavio Silva, supported by Wandile Duba, as the only standout centre-forward who delivered consistently for the team last season, highlighting the club’s pressing need for reliable goalscorers.
