Brandon Petersen: Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper equals 46-year history

Published on by

Kaizer Chiefs have been lauded for their bright start to the season and one of their heroes has been goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

\Petersen has played all five matches as Chiefs have remained unbeaten, winning four and drawing the other.

What has been a highlight of Chiefs’ good start to the season has been their remarkably improved defence as they are yet to concede a goal, having kept five straight clean sheets.

What Amakhosi history has Petersen equaled?

Key to that has been the impressive performances of Petersen, who has been trusted in goal by coach Nasredine Nabi, ahead of Bruce Bvuma, who played most of the games last season, and Fiacre Ntwari.

Following the good start, Petersen has etched his name in history as he has become the first Chiefs goalkeeper to keep five clean sheets in a row in the team’s opening five league games of a season since 1979.

Petersen equaled Banks Setlhodi, who was not breached in the Glamour Boys’ first five league games 46 years ago and he can edge ahead if Chiefs do not concede in their next match, which will be a top of the table clash against Sekhukhune United, after the international break.

“I think it’s very positive for the team now that we’ve played five games and still we didn’t concede any goal and we keep our clean sheet,” Nabi said of Chiefs’ five clean sheets on the bounce while lauding Petersen, as quoted by iDiski Times.

“But I have to say congratulation for all the team first and specific for Petersen for his performance and also for the goalkeeper coach [Ilyes Mzoughi] for the work he did with Petersen.

“I had trust in Petersen and they [goalkeeping department] knows his quality and I want to say congratulation for him and his coach.”

Petersen’s strong performances have also earned him praise from Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who has promised to give him a call-up in the next international window.
