Kaizer Chiefs beat Mamelodi Sundowns 5-4 on penalties to claim the inaugural Home of Legends Cup which was held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

This one-day tournament was organised by the Mandela Bay Development Agency brought exciting encounters on the day and this was the second trophy that Chiefs have won this season after clinching the first-ever 2024 Cultural Urban Festival Africa (CUFA) Cup in October.

Amakhosi downed Golden Arrows 2-0 in the semi-final thanks to Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Mfundo Vilakazi's goals.

Meanwhile, the second semi-final saw the Brazilians eliminate Chippa United on penalties to book their spot in the final.

The Soweto giants were seemingly much stronger than Bafana Ba Style in the first half as they were utilising their regular players and they had gotten a rest while Manqoba Mngqithi's side had just played.

Both teams had chances to open the scoring in the second half but couldn't.

The match had to be decided on penalties and Amakhosi came out victorious.

Why Nabi was not on the bench?

Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi recently had a minor orthopedic surgery, which has temporarily sidelined him from the Home of Legends Cup in Gqeberha.

Champions Prize Money?

For their triumph in the Home of Legends Cup, Kaizer Chiefs earned a prize of R1.5 million. This significant reward is likely to boost the Soweto giants coffers ahead of the opening of the transfer window in January.

However, the tournament organizers have not disclosed whether the losing semi-finalists Golden Arrows and Chippa United as well as runners-up Mamelodi Sundowns will receive any financial compensation.

What is the Home of Legends Cup?

The one-day tournament featured four teams: Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Golden Arrows, and Chippa United.

Golden Arrows were knocked out after losing to Kaizer Chiefs in the first semi-final on Saturday morning, while Mamelodi Sundowns triumphed over Chippa United in the second match of the day.

According to Anele Qaba, the chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Development Agency, the teams were selected based on their availability.
