Former Kaizer Chiefs winger and football analyst Junior Khanye has voiced his doubts over the club’s reported interest in appointing Fernando Da Cruz as their new head coach.
Sources within the club have indicated that Da Cruz has already accepted the top job at Naturena.
The 53-year-old’s most notable success came in Morocco, where he guided AS FAR Rabat to the 2022/23 Botola Pro League title while serving as technical director and manager.
Da Cruz was initially slated to be Nasreddine Nabi’s first assistant for the 2024/25 season, but he departed during pre-season to take up a role with the Moroccan Football Federation.

Speaking to KickOff, Khanye questioned the club’s strategy. “Chiefs are trying to bring back Nabi’s [former] right-hand man, but why are they pursuing him? This shows they are repeating the same mistakes made with Nabi,” he stated.
“What real change will occur if Da Cruz is appointed? Chiefs need a coach who will demand a chequebook, restructure the club’s development, and work closely with the head of development.”
Khanye believes the ideal candidate must possess a specific set of qualities. “They require a coach capable of attracting high-profile players, someone who understands South African football and can restore the team’s identity. The coach must be judged on results and help build a strong, sustainable club structure.”

In his view, there is only one man for the job: “Pitso Mosimane is that coach.”
He pointed to Mosimane’s legacy at Mamelodi Sundowns as a blueprint for success. “The formidable structure he established at Mamelodi Sundowns continues to secure league titles and Champions League victories even today,” Khanye noted.
He warned that mediocrity is not an option for a club of Chiefs’ stature. “Chiefs cannot settle for position four. A lot of work is needed to compete with Orlando Pirates and Sundowns. Proper planning is vital, especially with CAF Confederation Cup participation next season. There is no valid reason to hesitate in hiring Pitso.”
Amakhosi are expected to announce their new head coach in the coming days.
