Chiefs to battle Sundowns for key target but do they have the money?

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly counting on the influence of coach Nasreddine Nabi and assistant Cedric Kaze in their pursuit of Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum Abdallah.

Chiefs have made the Azam FC midfielder one of their key targets in the January transfer window but they are facing competition from Mamelodi Sundowns and there is hope that his relationship with Nabi and Kaze can help get the deal over the line.

One sticky issue is the transfer fee with Chiefs’ offer believed to be way below what Sundowns are willing to table, the Brazilians reportedly ready to offer R25 million, while the Glamour Boys are looking at R15 million.

That is why Chiefs hope Nabi and Kaze’s influence can win over the player as he worked with the two coaches at Tanzanian champions Yanga between 2021 and 2023 before he left for Azam.

“The club has taken the proposal by assistant coach Cedric Kaze very seriously concerning the need to sign Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum from Azam and that is why they have made an offer,” Soccer Laduma quoted a source from Chiefs.

“For now, I can tell you that it is not in the region of R30 million that the club asked for the player when Sundowns inquired about him but it is a good offer from Chiefs who have a tight budget at the moment.

“It will depend on other conditions and clauses in the proposal which could motivate Azam to consider what Chiefs had put on the table.”

Chiefs are looking for midfield reinforcements to help improve the quality of Nabi’s squad and the Tanzanian has emerged as one of the players they feel can lift the standards.

Popularly known as Fei Toto, Salum joined Azam in June 2023 after ending a protracted transfer saga with Yanga that had seen him refuse to play for the club for six months after demanding a release.
