Fernando da Cruz given Kaizer Chiefs warning – ‘Don’t come here to build’

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Robson Muchichwa has issued a stern warning to incoming coach Fernando Da Cruz, insisting that the club’s priority must be winning trophies, not long-term rebuilding projects.

The Amakhosi endured another barren season, finishing without any silverware under the guidance of co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze. The pair, who initially joined as assistants for former coach Nasredine Nabi, were unable to deliver success even if they led Chiefs to third place.

Muchichwa believes that while Da Cruz brings a fresh perspective, the pressure to deliver immediate results is non-negotiable at a club of Chiefs’ stature.

“Fernando, I think he is bringing a new mind and new thinking to the Kaizer Chiefs team,” Muchichwa told KickOff. “If he is already here, then let’s give him a chance because there is nothing we can do. Let’s see what he has. He might be bringing something to the team.”

The former player noted the historical success of French coaches at the club, expressing hope that Da Cruz could continue that trend. “The French coaches have that tendency of doing well at Kaizer Chiefs; mostly they tend to have what we need,” he added.

However, Muchichwa was firm in his expectations, stating that patience for a rebuilding phase has run out among the fanbase.

“We don’t want a coach that will come here to build, no. You can’t build at Kaizer Chiefs,” he declared. “We need a person who knows what he is doing, a person who will come and put this team together and win trophies.”

He emphasised the difference between celebrating individual victories and securing major honours, a distinction he feels is crucial for the club’s identity.

“We must celebrate trophies, not games. When Kaizer Chiefs fans are celebrating games while others are celebrating trophies, then there’s a huge difference,” Muchichwa concluded.

“We don’t need someone who will come here and start from the bottom, rebuilding the team. This is not a small club where you need to build.”
