Onyango on concluded 2025/26 edition

Mamelodi Sundowns veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has reflected on the enormity of winning the second CAF Champions League title.

In a season where they didn’t win anything domestically, Sundowns defeated ASFAR of Morocco over two legs to lift the continental title for a second time making the Ugandan the most decorated player in South Africa. He has 18 titles that include 12 league trophies, four domestic cups and two Champions League medals.

“What it stands for me is the persistence and determination of this group,” said Onyango,” he told the Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine.

“We had the quality every season but it was never enough without making history. So we kept pushing, kept knocking on the door year after year, believing that one day it would open for us and eventually it did.”

The 41-year-old added that the feat also comes with the pressure to maintain their competitive levels. Winning the Champions League brings responsibility.

“Everyone now expects you to perform at the highest level every time you step on the pitch. That pressure is heavy but it also strengthens us and keeps us sharp,” he added.

Sundowns legend gives Williams a piece of advice

Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper John Tlale has identified a key area for improvement for current national team goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Tlale praised Williams’ performance against Mexico, noting his numerous saves, but expressed concerns regarding an overconfidence that could be problematic.

He pointed out an incident involving a pass to Yaya that was repeated despite previous criticism, suggesting that Williams should not hesitate to clear the ball when under pressure, as there is no shame in kicking the ball away to alleviate danger. Tlale stressed the necessity of varying gameplay, as consistency in one approach can be detrimental.

Additionally, Tlale advised that if a goalkeeper lacks confidence in a defender, it is preferable not to pass the ball, as errors may occur, which can be scrutinized. He highlighted that opponents have analyzed Williams’ game footage, including an incident in the FIFA Club World Cup where he conceded a similar goal.
