Premier Soccer League leaders Orlando Pirates added three players in the January transfer window.
Andre de Jong was signed from Stellenbosch FC alongside Marumo Gallants duo Daniel Msendami and Mpho Chabatsane. But it was the former Stellies’ man signing that surprised many.

This is because the Sea Robbers were not short in that department, which was filled with players with international experience.
What is De Jong’s best position?
The New Zealand international can play in any position, especially in attack as well as midfield. He has since revealed the best position where he can effectively deliver for the Sea Robbers.
“I think our coach allows a lot of freedom, so you get on the ball, and obviously one of my strong points is linking up play, releasing other players in the final third,” he stated as explained by FARPost.

“So I think building on that and having an eye for the goal, so just get in the box and finish things off. I think Pirates suit my game nicely, as I said earlier, with having 65 to 70% of the possession. So I’m just looking to build on that.
“I can play as a 10 and upfront, but playing as a false 9 would be more so [best position],” he added.
How Pirates move will impact De Jong’s World Cup inspirations
“So far it’s been very enjoyable, it’s always tough to move mid-season, but the players have been very hospitable for me, as well as the technical team, I think I’m finding my feet nicely, looking forward to a big couple weeks ahead, but so far I’ve enjoyed Johannesburg and the team,” he continued.

“When Pirates first showed interest, it was a very exciting move for me, I think it really pushes for my aspirations to make the New Zealand World Cup team, it’s one of my big goals and then Pirates have also collected a lot of trophies in the past. So, joining an establishment can only be good for my career and hopefully I can contribute to the team winning more trophies.
“I’ve been called up for the last two windows, hopefully I get the call-up in March.
“There’s a couple of games back in New Zealand which will be amazing to be involved in and then obviously push for that final call in May. So it’s really exciting for New Zealand football, similarly to South Africa, being back in the World Cup for the first time since 2010, so big opportunity to be involved in that,” the 29-year-old De Jong concluded.
