Former Orlando Pirates defender Michael Morton has given insights into how coach Jose Riveiro has managed to succeed at the club.

Riveiro reached a landmark 100 games for the Buccaneers on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory against Richards Bay, taking his record to 61 wins, 20 draws and 19 losses, giving him a win percentage of 61 per cent during his time in charge since being unveiled in July 2022.

The win also saw Pirates notch a club record seventh successive league win to leave them top of the PSL table on 21 points, six ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, with their fans dreaming of a first league title in 12 years.

Morton, who played as a full-back at Pirates from 2008-2011, has listed a number of things Riveiro has implemented at Pirates which have brought him success.

Jose Riveiro’s leadership & trust in youth lauded

“Riveiro’s leadership has been pivotal. His clear vision and tactical adaptability have stabilised the team, leading to multiple trophies and a strong winning mentality. The faith and trust shown by the management and belief in the long-term vision of the coach have been pivotal,” he stated, through a series of tweets.

“Pirates have brought in big personalities and leaders like [Tapelo] Xoki, [Deano] van Rooyen, [Olisa] Ndah, [Innocent] Maela, [Miguel] Timm, and [Makhehlene] Makhaula, who bring guidance and drive to the squad, creating a solid team culture.

“Young talents like [Relebohile] Mofokeng, [Thabiso] Sesane, and [Mohau] Nkota are energising the squad, blending youth with experience and ensuring a bright future for the club. They have been phased in gradually, giving them time and the necessary experience.”

Do the Buccaneers have depth to challenge Sundowns?

Morton also feels Riveiro is benefiting from a big squad which offers him a lot of options while he has enough firepower upfront to win matches.

“The increased depth across all positions has allowed for effective rotation without losing strength. This depth has been crucial for handling packed schedules and injuries, keeping the team competitive across all competitions and now hopefully mounting a challenge for the league,” he added.

“With players like [Tshegofatso] Mabasa, [Monnapule] Saleng, Mofokeng and [Evidence] Makgopa leading the attack, Pirates have the firepower to secure wins and remain a formidable opponent.”

The Cape Town Spurs full-back feels Pirates are well-armed to mount a title challenge in the league, backing them to push perennial winners Mamelodi Sundowns all the way.
