Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star backs Pitso Mosimane for Bafana Bafana AFCON rival’s job

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande wants to see Pitso Mosimane handed the Zimbabwe national team job.

The Warriors are without a coach following the sacking of German coach Michael Nees this month after a string of poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers when they finished bottom in their group without a win.

Zimbabwe sank so low that they were beaten 1-0 by Lesotho, the whipping boys of Group C, which was won by Bafana Bafana, who secured the direct ticket to next year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Katsande makes Mosimane plea to ZIFA

Nees had helped Zimbabwe qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but his stint after has been a disaster and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) finally yielded to pressure from fans to send him packing, two months before the tournament starts in Morocco.

Now, former Warriors captain Katsande is calling on ZIFA to appoint Mosimane as he believes the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach has what it takes to succeed in the role.

“ZIFA what are we waiting for? This man loves Zim players with all his heart,” Katsande wrote on his Facebook page.

Can Zimbabwe manage to lure Pitso?

Zimbabwe have some top players playing abroad, such as Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa of Wolves in the English Premier League, Sundowns’ left-back Divine Lunga, while Khama Billiat, a player Mosimane knows too well from their time at Sundowns, also returned to the national team under Nees.

Mosimane has been without a job since leaving Iranian club Esteghlal FC in January and it is not certain if he would be willing to take on a national team or whether Zimbabwe can afford him and his technical staff as he prefers to come with his own men.

Zimbabwe have Bafana Bafana again in their AFCON 2025 group, which also has Egypt and Angola, with the tournament set to take place between December 21, 2025 and January 18, 2026.
