Fadlu Davids back to Orlando Pirates? Simba SC coach addresses Bucs links after Riveiro’s exit

Published on by

Jose Riveiro officially left Orlando Pirates on Tuesday after helping the Buccaneers beat Golden Arrows 3-0 in the Premier Soccer League game staged at the Orlando Stadium.

The Spaniard had served Bucs for three seasons; during his reign, he won three MTN8 crowns and two Nedbank Cups. The Soweto giants have qualified for the Caf Champions League on three occasions, and managed to reach the semi-final of the prestigious competition in the almost-ending edition.

It explains why he has been heavily linked with a move to Egyptian outfit Al Ahly who are without a coach after the exit of Marcel Koller.

Davids, the next Bucs coach?

Rulani Mokwena, Pitso Mosimane, Benni McCarthy and Mandla Ncikazi are some of the names that have been linked with the vacant seat at Pirates. However, recently, Simba SC coach Fadlu Davids has been heavily linked with the vacant job.

“I think let’s just clear it up now; there’s been no contact from Pirates, definitely not. And like I said at the moment, no, there’s not really an intention to come back right now. Like I said, I still have a year left,” he told iDiski Times in a recent interview.

“Let’s finish the season and, like I said, try to fulfil the contract that’s left, and then we see what’s next after that,” the former Bucs’ assistant and co-coach added.

Fadlu exceeding expectations in Tanzania?

Under his leadership, Wekundu wa Msimbazi are chasing the league, and are in the semi-final of the Federation Cup in Tanzania. They will play RS Berkane in the Caf Confederation Cup final.

“I think the first season was to get back into the Champions League, to build this squad, because the profile of players we signed was 18 to 24,” the 43-year-old continued.

“So in the first season, [we wanted to] adapt to the league, adapt to CAF, and the second season was the season where we were going to challenge. So we take a game at a time. But quite a hectic schedule upcoming, and they’ve just revised our fixture now going on till the 27th of June with the CRDB Cup final.

“If all goes well, and you don’t count your chickens before, but it could be again a Yanga-Simba final, because Yanga is playing JKT in the other semi-final.”
