Former Orlando Pirates striker terms Kaizer Chiefs championship material

Kaizer Chiefs’ good start to the season has left their fans delighted but it seems pundits are also falling in love with Amakhosi.

Chiefs have put together a three-match winning run in the league with Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Richards Bay taking them joint top of the table with nine points.

The Glamour Boys have been winning even without playing particularly well but the tactics of assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, who have stepped in, in the absence of their boss Nasreddine Nabi, are inspiring the team to the wins.

Kaizer Chiefs’ double subs changed the game

That was also witnessed on Tuesday when they brought on Nkosingiphile Ngcobo for Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Gaston Sirino for Siphesihle Ndlovu at halftime and the substitution changed the outlook of the game before they combined to set up the Uruguayan-born forward to fire home in the 57th minute.

Following their win, former Orlando Pirates striker Phumudzo Manenzhe feels Chiefs’ coaches and players are showing the form and tactics of a championship-winning team.

“Championship teams win games like these where they do not deserve to win and for me, it talks a lot about the technical team of Kaizer Chiefs,” Manenzhe said on SuperSport TV while analysing the match.

What impressed Manenzhe about Amakhosi?

“They see that they made a tactical mistake in the game, starting with a six and two eights then they saw that at halftime, they needed to make a tactical switch.

“Keep an eight, play two 10s and be able to be more creative in the final third. The goal Sirino scores is a great goal but let us give credit to the technical team of Kaizer Chiefs to say they made the mistake in terms of how they set up in that midfield.

“They make the double change and that goes to elevate the game into the next level and Sirino scores a great goal.”

Chiefs’ championship credentials will come under a major test next week when they host a team that knows how to win titles in holders Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday August 27.
