Gaston Sirino’s beauty delivers third straight PSL win for table-topping Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs kept their fans believing when they recorded a third straight league win following a 1-0 victory over Richards Bay at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday.

Substitute Gaston Sirino’s beauty delivered all three points for Chiefs in the 57th minute as he showed great quality to break the deadlock.

After a first half when both sides huffed and puffed, it was down to a moment of quality that broke Richards Bay’s resistance as against the run of play, Wandile Duba laid the ball back and with Mduduzi Shabalala making a clever dummy, Sirino hammered it home.

The Uruguayan-born forward connected well with the ball and curled it into the top corner and beyond Richards Bay goalkeeper Salim Magoola.

That was after a first half where Chiefs lost defender Aden McCarthy to a hamstring injury in the 35th minute to be replaced by Zitha Kwinika.

Chiefs’ best chance in the first half fell to Shabalala, who fired over the bar after a good exchange of passes on the edge of the box, and just after restart, Glody Lilepo had a header at the back post but the ball was swiftly cleared by Halalisani Vilakazi.

Where does the result leave Kaizer Chiefs?

Chiefs came close twice just before Sirino’s goal, Duba getting a free header in the box but directing it at the goalkeeper, while Bradley Cross drew a good fingertip save from Magoola.

Chiefs had other chances to score with Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi drawing good saves from the Ugandan goalkeeper.

Amakhosi held firm to collect all three points which takes their tally to nine and joint top of the table with Sekhukhune United.

It is now five more points for Chiefs over Mamelodi Sundowns and nine ahead of winless Orlando Pirates although both of them play on Wednesday but it rekindles memories of the 2014-15 season, when Amakhosi started with three straight wins and went on to win the title.
