Gavin Hunt gutted to miss star against Chiefs & updates on Ndah’s situation

Stellenbosch are set for two crucial outings in the South African domestic competitions.

On Saturday, Stellies will be away against Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16. Gavin Hunt’s men advanced after beating holders Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the initial phase.

After the weekend’s game, Hunt’s men will be away at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday in the Premier Soccer League fixture.

The big miss!

However, Stellenbosch will be without their star player, Wonderboy Makhubu, who is injured. Hunt concedes it is a massive blow for his team.

“A huge blow, you know we’re really struggling up front, isn’t it?” The 61-year-old said in a presser.

“So it’s a huge blow, especially with the next two games. You know, a cup game is a cup game, but the Chiefs game, I mean, he was so good against Chiefs two weeks ago [in the Nedbank Cup]. So it’s a huge blow,” he added.

Latest on Mabasa’s fitness and Ndah’s availability

“Actually, I might go [to the work-permit offices regarding Olisa Ndah’s situation] now. He is eager to play, the former Orlando Pirates captain, though also needs him to get match fitness,” Hunt said in a presser.

“We need another centre back, don’t we? You know, badly, He’s another one. You know, you take [Asekho] Tiwani, [Mosa] Lebusa, [Tshegofatso] Mabasa, he didn’t play much in CAF, so that’s a problem.

“So these guys, I’ve tried to play fit, you know, same as Wonderboy, I tried to play him fit, which we did against Chiefs.

“But the problem when you take players from clubs, you think you’re getting, but they don’t train, they play five-a-side of the pitch, so to go into this intensity is always difficult, but we can just get them through this period,” he concluded.
