‘He was excellent’: Riveiro praises Pirates star after advancing to Nedbank Cup semis

Published on by

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was effusive in his praise for goalkeeper Sipho Chaine after the Buccaneers stormed into the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.

The Buccaneers overcame SuperSport United in a nail-biting penalty shootout, winning 5-4 after a 2-2 deadlock across 120 minutes.

Chaine proved the ultimate hero, repelling not one, but two penalties to seal the Buccaneers' triumph. He sensationally denied both former teammate Vincent Pule and Christian Saile from the spot.

Riveiro lauded Chaine’s performance, hailing him as “superb” between the posts and crediting him for delivering a victory that keeps Orlando Pirates' ambitions for a historic Nedbank Cup three-peat burning brightly.

RIVEIRO ON PENALTY SAVES AGAINST SUPERSPORT

“It’s one of the possibilities in a knockout game, there’s only two possible results in these types of games, if you can not make it in the 120 minutes, you have to go to penalties and do your best,” Riveiro said.

“We did good job in that space, and again happy to be in the semi-finals.

“It’s his role in the penalty shoot out, he has to stay there between the posts and try to catch at least one more than the opponent, he’s been doing well in that scenario in recent occasions in penalties.

“Today again he did an excellent job, together with the analysis department, with the goalkeeper coach, with everyone in that space, helping him to do the right decisions.”
