Former Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela has shed light on his decision to retire from professional football at the age of 32, revealing that a loss of passion for the daily demands of the sport was the primary factor.
Maela, a product of the Buccaneers' youth academy, enjoyed a decorated career, making 210 appearances and scoring six goals for the Soweto giants.
His time at Pirates saw him lift two Nedbank Cups and four MTN8 titles, making him one of the most successful players of his generation at the Soweto giants.
Under the guidance of coach Jose Riveiro, Maela captained the team from 2022 to 2025, leading them to an impressive five major trophies during that period. His contributions included a memorable goal against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby.

Speaking at a retirement dinner held in his honour in Johannesburg, Maela explained his reasoning. “I think for me, retiring at the time that I retired, it was the right time,” Maela told FARPost. “When I was searching for that spark, I couldn’t find it anymore… I tried my best to help the team, and I felt it was time.”
After a demanding career, the player affectionately known as ‘Deco' is taking a well-deserved break. “It’s been three months, and I’ve been enjoying my time,” he said. “I’m still enjoying my time. Let me own my time for now, and let’s see how the future unfolds.”
Maela is now fully focused on completing his studies now that he has plenty of time as he had found it difficult to juggle books and football during his playing career.
What is Maela interested in pursuing now?

While he has hung up his boots, Maela confirmed he intends to remain involved in the sport that has defined his life. However, he has a clear preference for his next role.
“Football is my life. I’ve played football ever since I could remember, and I’m definitely planning on staying [in the game], be it coaching or administration. But if I were to choose right now, I would definitely choose admin rather than being a coach,” he added.
“It was an honour and a special feeling I will never forget. Being the captain of Pirates was amazing, and lifting the five trophies in three years was amazing,” Maela said about his best moments in a Pirates shirt.
