Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen hopes Amakhosi will win the Nedbank Cup to end their 10-year silverware drought.
Chiefs hoped to at least make some significant improvement when Nasreddine Nabi took over at the beginning of the season. The Glamour Boys did not qualify for the MTN8, their chances of winning a trophy lied with the Premier Soccer League, Nedbank Cup and the Carling Knockout.
The Soweto Giants were eliminated from the Carling Knockout in the quarter-final. Chances of winning the PSL are slim owing to their inconsistency. However, they have another opportunity to get a trophy in the Nedbank Cup.
It will be different – Petersen promises
Chiefs are the most successful team in the Nedbank Cup tournament having won it 13 times. In the Round of 32, they have been paired with third-tier side Free Agents. However, the main target is ending a decade-long drought.
“Obviously, you know I think that will be a bit of extra motivation to the guys knowing that at the moment there's only the Nedbank Cup and the league that's still up for grabs,” Petersen said after the draw.
“So, I think realistically speaking, going for this trophy and trying to change our fortunes and obviously using that as a motivation, as a stepping stone. I think this time around I have a feeling it will be quite different and hopefully, God willing, we can go all the way.”
It is the first time hearing about Free Agents but…
The custodian was honest he knows nothing about their Round of 32 opponents, but insisted the team will not underrate them since the Cup competition has its surprises.
“To be honest with you, no, it’s the first time tonight I saw that name but I think if the past is anything to go by, I think there's no team you can underestimate in the Nedbank Cup.
“You know it's full of surprises and hopefully this season, this time around, we can turn our fortunes in the Nedbank Cup and add to that trophy cabinet and to the history of being the most successful club in the Nedbank Cup.”
The Round of 32 will be played between January 25 and 28.
