Kabuscorp vs Kaizer Chiefs: Preview, team news, time and where to watch

Published on by , updated on

Kaizer Chiefs begin life without coach Nasreddine Nabi with a tricky away clash against Angolan side Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round on Saturday September 20.

Chiefs’ preparations have been overshadowed by the news of Nabi’s impending departure with the club confirming on Friday that they are in talks with the 60-year-old over his future with a mutual termination of his contract imminent.

The Glamour Boys traveled to Angola on Thursday for the match and will be led by assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze but it is still not known if the two will stay or follow their boss out the exit door after Saturday’s match.

Chiefs will hope that the situation surrounding Nabi is not a major distraction on Saturday as they return to continental football for the first time since 2021.

The Soweto giants last played a continental football match four years ago, when they reached that year’s CAF Champions League final before losing to Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly, but this time around, they return in the second-tier competition.

How do the two teams compare on form?

Chiefs come into the match after playing six games this season, winning four, drawing one and losing another one and they had been unbeaten until Sekhukhune United handed them a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday.

That was after five matches when they did not concede and the defeat to Babina Noko gave them a reality check and perhaps optimism for Kabuscorp, who are coming from a morale-boosting win.

Kabuscorp have played just two games in the Angolan league this season, starting with a 3-1 loss to giants Petro de Luanda, before beating Interclube 1-0 on Tuesday in what was good preparations for Chiefs.

Have Kaizer Chiefs and Kabuscorp ever faced off?

This is the first head-to-head meeting between the two teams but the South African giants have faced Angolan opposition six times, winning three and drawing as many.

How Kabuscorp and Kaizer Chiefs got here

The two teams made it to the Confederation Cup after winning cups in their respective countries with Kabuscorp claiming the 2025 Angolan Cup while Chiefs won the Nedbank Cup last season, ending their 10-year trophy drought.

Kaizer Chiefs will be led by assistant coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze with their boss having not travelled as he negotiates his way out of the club.

The two will be counting on their good record when they led the team early in the season as Nabi was away on compassionate leave, winning three straight games, and they will hope for more of such magic.

Kaizer Chiefs team news: Mayo missing by Silva firing

Chiefs will still be without new signing Khanyisa Mayo as he did not travel to Angola, same as other new recruits Ethan Chislett, Asanele Velebayi, Etiosa Ighodaro, Luke Baartman and Lebohang Maboe who are still not ready while Thabiso Monyane also stayed at home as he nurses an injury.

Striker Flavio Silva has scored in his first two games for Chiefs and will likely be rewarded with a third straight start.

Time and where to watch

The match will take place at the Estadio 11 de Novembro in Luanda with kick off set at 17:00 (South African time) and will be live on SABC2.
