Kaizer Chiefs advised to sign another goalkeeper in January

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Katlego ‘Killer’ Mphela has advised the club to ensure they sign another goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

Chiefs have three goalkeepers already competing for a starting place with Fiacre Ntwari, who was signed from TS Galaxy in the off-season, Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma all having been utilised this season.

This is because coach Nasreddine Nabi has not been convinced with the performances of either of them, having started the season with Ntwari in goal, before he suffered an injury, with Petersen handed the gloves but with him out injured, Bvuma has been playing lately.

Kaizer Chiefs can’t stop conceding

To show how Nabi is struggling in the goalkeeping department, Ntwari, seen as the long-term replacement for club legend Itumeleng Khune, is yet to be called back even after returning from injury.

However, that has not stopped Chiefs from shipping in goals with the club keeping just one clean sheet in 10 league matches, and two across all competitions.

While the defence has been blamed for not providing enough cover, the goalkeepers have also been cited for some mistakes and Mphela feels this is an area Chiefs must address immediately.

Do Amakhosi need another keeper?

“Yes, they can sign a winger and a striker in January but they should also look at bringing in a goalkeeper. That department needs strengthening,” Mphela told Soccer Laduma.

“Some of the games the team has lost have been partly due to the mistakes from the goalkeepers, irrespective of who was in goal. So, if they can strengthen the last line of defence, it would be great for the team.

“The club should give young Bontle Molefe a chance. He is young but good.”

The former Bafana Bafana striker also feels Chiefs rushed to get Khune out without doing proper due diligence on the right goalkeeper to replace him and that is why they are struggling in that department.
