Kaizer Chiefs given Bongani Zungu advice

Former Kaizer Chiefs player Mandla Masango has urged the club to consider ex-Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu to shore up their midfield.

Zungu has been a free agent since his surprising departure from Sundowns in June, with a number of clubs linked with him, but no deal has been struck.

He came close to reuniting with his former Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco but the two parties have failed to reach an agreement and he is back in South Africa.

With Chiefs struggling in the middle of the pack, an area that was heavily exposed during last Saturday’s 4-0 Carling Knockout quarter-final loss to Sundowns, Masango believes Zungu would be a welcome addition to the squad.

“I think Kaizer Chiefs need more experience in their squad,” Masango told Radio2000.

“The youngsters are doing well, but they need support. A player like Bongani Zungu is available, and maybe they should go for him.

“With [Nasreddine] Nabi at the helm, with a few experienced players, they are on the right track.”

Masango feels Zungu will not only help the young players at the club but also improve the dynamics of how Chiefs play, while his immediate availability is a major plus.

Can Bongani Zungu improve Amakhosi’s midfield?

“Yes, you can see that he wants to play more counterattacks and he’s trying to neutralise the midfield and also he wants to build-up from the back,” he added.

“In my opinion, maybe a player like Zungu who is currently a free agent, I think he just needs a pivot that can be an interlink between the defence and attacking.”

Chiefs recently suffered a blow in midfield following an injury to Edson Castillo who will reportedly be out for up to five months.
