Kaizer Chiefs have apologised for the unruly behaviour of a section of their fans during their 4-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout quarter-final on Saturday.
Chiefs were put to the sword by the Brazilians in the one-sided match at the FNB Stadium and their fans reacted by throwing objects onto the pitch, while some even made their way to the turf, in an effort to attack the referee.
The ugly incident has left Chiefs facing further sanctions, coming just one month after they were handed a R150,000 fine by the PSL over the bad conduct of their supporters when they met Sundowns at the FNB Stadium on September 28.
Amakhosi hit out at their fans
Chiefs have issued an apology over the incident while calling out their fans who were responsible for the unacceptable behaviour.
“Kaizer Chiefs would like to sincerely apologise to all our stakeholders, sponsors, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), South African Football Association (SAFA), and our loyal supporters for the disappointing incidents witnessed on Saturday during the Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinal match against Mamelodi Sundowns,” Chiefs said through a statement.
“While it was a beautiful day for football, it was unfortunately marred by behaviour that has no place in our beloved game. The invasion of the pitch and the throwing of missiles onto the field are completely unacceptable.
Will Chiefs face further sanctions?
“Despite thorough preparations for the sold-out match, we observed issues arising early on, with some supporters already under the influence of alcohol before the game, leading to unwanted incidents. This highlights a pressing societal issue that the football industry and our communities must address collectively.”
Chiefs’ apology comes a day after cross-town rivals Pirates were fined R100,000 for the fan unrest witnessed during their shock loss to Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Round of 16.
