Mamelodi Sundowns veteran Themba Zwane has opened up about winning a second CAF Champions League crown.

Zwane is among two players who won their second Champions League crown, the other one being Denis Onyango, and after extending his stay at the club for a further season last week, the midfielder, who will turn 37 in August is still hungry for more.

“It (CAF Champions League medal) means a lot, it’s history, after retiring I’ll be able to sit at home and show my kids what I’ve done and bring back all the memories,” Zwane said on the club’s Pitchside Podcast.

“Yes, hundred percent (I still get excited to go to train), one thing that drives me is to wake up, go to the gym and help Kutlwano, Mabena, those young ones, that drives me.”

How Miguel Cardoso silenced his critics

Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Andre Arendse feels coach Miguel Cardoso managed to keep his critics quiet when he won the CAF Champions League following doubts over his suitability and his style for most parts of the season.

Cardoso’s position became a subject of speculation when his team struggled on the pitch while their football was not good on the eye with fans calling for his head but he survived and even though he lost the PSL title, he claimed continental honours.

“If you have to choose between trophies like the Nedbank Cup or PSL, you obviously choose the Champions League. That silences everybody, like what coach Cardoso managed to do,” Arendse told FARPost.

“So, Sundowns need to support him and give him space to continue doing his job. He has done well, and the Champions League is huge; it’s a big achievement.

“Of course, some people doubted him earlier, and it looked impossible to win this trophy, but he proved them wrong. That’s a mark of a champion, and that is some character from the coach and his team.”
