Mayo & Mmodi break silence on Khanyisa’s grave mistake that denied Chiefs win over AmaZulu

Kaizer Chiefs duo Khanyisa Mayo and Pule Mmodi have opened up on the massive blunder by the former that denied Amakhosi maximum points against AmaZulu in the Premier Soccer League outing staged at the FNB Stadium recently.

With the Glamour Boys leading by a solitary goal and Gaston Sirino missing a penalty, Mmodi thought he had doubled the advantage in the stroke of halftime. However, Mayo – who was in an offside position, touched the ball leaving the assistant referee with no option but to cancel the goal.

The incident put the Bafana Bafana striker in bad light with the fans who called him all sorts of names, especially after the game, eventually, ended 1-1.

As a matter of fact, the last time the Soweto giants collected maximum points was in August, and currently, the pressure has now turned, not only to the players, but the technical team – led by co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef as well.

Mayo and Mmodi bury hatchet over the incident

Ahead of the Wednesday game against Siwelele that will be played at the FNB Stadium, Mayo has revealed he sought forgiveness from his team mate.

“During the game at half-time, we spoke about it, I apologised, he said to me; these things happen; it’s football, it was a lapse of concentration, I wasn’t aware of my surroundings and it happened, we moved on,” he told the media.

“We spoke about it even after the game, I gave him a call and we spoke about it – and he said no don’t worry, these things happen, it’s done, let’s focus on what is next,” Mayo concluded.

Mmodi seconded the former Cape Town City forward, “As he said, this is football it’s been a long time I know Mayo, he’s a striker, who likes to score goals.

“I never took it personally to ask why would you do that? But everyone makes mistakes, nobody is perfect, life goes on, because the next day I will need him,” he concluded.
