Kaizer Chiefs recently added Bafana Bafana striker Khanyisa Mayo to their already impressive squad for this season.
The 27-year-old joined, albeit on loan, from Algerian outfit CR Belouizdad, where he struggled to deliver, having played 41 games with a return of just six goals. He is the 11th signing for the Glamour Boys, who have managed four wins and a draw in the five Premier Soccer League season.
Mayo has now fulfilled his father's wish of playing for Amakhosi; Patrick Mayo played for the Soweto giants from 2003 to 2007. The South Africa forward has revealed how he broke the news to his parents and the reaction.
However, the main thing for the former Cape Town City is to make an impact for his new team domestically and in the CAF Confederation Cup.
‘Aim is for the fans to have a wonderful season'
“The first person I called was my mother, who was sitting with my father, and they both jumped for joy and celebrated that I would be joining my father in continuing the legacy of the Club,” Mayo said as quoted by the club's media team.
“The fact that he came before me adds a bit of pressure for me, but it’s something I grew up with, so I’m used to it. My aim is for the fans to have a wonderful season with me involved in the team.
“You can expect my best efforts to score goals for the team and work hard to help the Club deliver success for our amazing supporters, creating unforgettable memories. Amakhosi 4 Life,” the experienced striker concluded.
Mayo might make his debut on Tuesday when Chiefs host Sekhukhune United at the FNB Stadium. However, he will have to prove, in training, that he is better than Flavio Silva, Etiosa Ighodaro, Ashley du Preez, Wandile Duba, and Tashreeq Morris, who are also fighting for the starting berth.
