Khanyisa Mayo delighted to follow in father’s footsteps after ‘dream’ Chiefs move

Kaizer Chiefs new signing Khanyisa Mayo has explained what encouraged him to make the move to the club amid offers from clubs abroad.

Mayo sealed a season-long loan transfer to Chiefs after falling out of favour at Algerian club CR Belouizdad now under former TS Galaxy coach Sead Ramovic.

Ramovic failed to register Mayo in his squad for the 2025-26 season and later said the player was not in his plans, telling him to find a new club.

Chiefs reacted quickly and reignited their past interest in the forward, who they came close to signing in 2024 before he opted to move to Algeria, and the forward terms his move a dream come true.

“It is a dream come true. The only team I would come back for is Kaizer Chiefs,” Mayo said in his first interview as a Chiefs player.

“The club has a great history. My father is part of that great history, so I wanted to play for the biggest team in the country, in Africa, in the world, I can say, because Kaizer Chiefs is the biggest team in the world to me.”

Mayo is seeking to walk into his father Patrick Mayo’s footsteps after he starred for the Glamour Boys from 2003-2007 with his dad giving him timely advice after the dream move.

“The only thing he needs to do is to work extra hard at a team like Kaizer Chiefs, there is no other way,” said Patrick as per KickOff.

“He needs to familiarise himself with things like extra training. Arriving early at training to practise set pieces will help him settle more quickly… Nothing beats hard work. If the boy works hard, he will achieve everything he wants to achieve with Chiefs,” he said.

“I think he will have a good season at Chiefs because he is more focused now.”

Mayo arrived at Chiefs on Friday and met coach Nasreddine Nabi as well as his new team-mates before his official unveiling.
