Bafana Bafana’s World Cup rivals Mexico have reportedly prepared a report that identifies where they could exploit Hugo Broos’ men.
South Africa will open the 2026 tournament with a clash against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on June 11 and the Central American side are leaving no stone unturned.
Both sides met in the opening match of the 2010 World Cup which was hosted in South Africa and played out an exciting 1-1 draw.

There are high expectations again this time with a hope that Hugo Broos’ team will get past the group stages of the expanded 48-team tournament, having failed to achieve this in 1998, 2002 and 2010.
Where does Mexico hope to hurt Bafana?
As both teams prepare for the opening match, Mexico feel Bafana Bafana have a good mix of youth and experience with their main strength being in attack and midfield but feel they can exploit their backline.
“Broos’ focus on youth aims to bring freshness and energy to the team, something that could be key in a demanding tournament like the World Cup,” a Mexican report states as quoted by KickOff.

“Lyle Foster’s experience in England is a plus that South Africa hopes to capitalise on. However, they will need to work on their defence if they want to have a standout performance in the tournament.”
Concern over South Africa’s defence
Defence had been South Africa’s strength during the qualification phase but it was badly exposed at AFCON 2025, where they conceded five goals on four matches as they exited at the Round of 16, having let in five in nine during the World Cup qualifiers, while keeping five clean sheets.

The same problems were brought to the fore during their last two friendly matches against Panama in March when they drew 1-1 before losing 2-1 and Broos has work to do before the World Cup.
In his preliminary squad for the World Cup, Broos named defenders; Khuliso Mudau (Mamelodi Sundowns), Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union), Bradley Cross (Kaizer Chiefs), Thabiso Monyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Thabang Matuludi (Polokwane City), Nkosinathi Sibisi (Orlando Pirates), Aubrey Modiba (Mamelodi Sundowns), Khulumani Ndamane (Mamelodi Sundowns), Ime Okon (Hannover 96), Samukele Kabini (Molde FK) and Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Chicago Fire).
