Relebohile Mofokeng responds to Hugo Broos over his best position

Orlando Pirates forward Relebohile Mofokeng has commented on the raging debate over his best position on the pitch.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has already declared that he will no longer play the 21-year-old on the wings as he feels he does not have the qualities to play there but will rather utilise him in the No.10 position.

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has also deployed Mofokeng as a No.10 for most of this season and the player has no problem with where he plays.

“If the coach puts me as a winger or No.10 I just have to perform in the team,” Mofokeng said on SABC after scoring his first career hat-trick as Pirates thrashed 10-man TS Galaxy in Durban on Sunday.

“It is the same because No.10 and a winger are almost the same position so I think I just have to perform anywhere they put me.”

Mofokeng’s position has been a subject of debate in the last two years with opinion divided on whether he is a winger or an attacking midfielder.

The youngster has thrived in both positions, beating opponents with his fleet feet and pace on the wings, while he also has the intelligence to play in tight spaces and open up defences with ease when deployed behind the main striker.

Mofokeng had a great game on Sunday, scoring a brilliant freekick to break the deadlock before slotting in from the near post for his brace and completed his hat-trick with a beautifully curled effort late in the game.

That took his tally to eight goals this season, seven in the league, and he is hitting form at the right time for Pirates who are looking to win the Premier Soccer League title for the first time since 2012.

Mofokeng will now head to the Bafana Bafana camp high on confidence ahead of South Africa’s matches against Panama in Durban and Cape Town on March 27 and 31 respectively.
