Mofokeng’s ex-coach picks best European leagues for free-scoring Pirates star

Relebohile Mofokeng’s former coach at the School of Excellence, Masimanyane Xali, has explained where he feels his prodigy could thrive in Europe.

Mofokeng has been linked with a move abroad for the last two years but a deal is yet to materialise.

However, the 21-year-old has kept his feet firmly on the ground and is doing his talking on the pitch with 10 goals so far this season, nine scored in his last 10 games, including a hat-trick and then a double in Pirates’ last two games.

That has only strengthened the calls for Mofokeng to test himself against some of the best players in the world with French club Monaco the latest to be linked to him.

“He has already played CAF Champions League and he has shown what he could do there, so I think he’s ready (to go overseas), he has been ready for some time now, but it’s just maybe he’s waiting for the right opportunity to come,” Xali told Soccer Laduma.

Xali wants Mofokeng to work his way up if he is to ditch Pirates for a stint abroad, suggesting a start at either lower leagues in Spain or midtable clubs elsewhere in Europe.

“There’s quite a few (leagues that can suit him), if you look at the type of a player he is, where you would find a similar type of players, you would look at Spain but not necessarily the big teams but he could do well in the lower teams in Spain to start or the mid teams,” added Xali.

“He could do well in the mid to top teams, maybe in Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, I’d say one of those four I think would be a good start for him.”

Mofokeng has risen to prominence this season since being deployed into the number 10 position by coach Abdeslam Ouaddou with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos also maintaining that it is the best place for him.

The Pirates academy graduate will hope to maintain the good form and extend it to the World Cup after which a possible move abroad will likely happen.
