Nabi discloses why Chiefs signed ‘intelligent player’ Maboe from Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has lauded the club’s decision to sign midfielder Lebohang Maboe.

Maboe became the 10th signing for Chiefs, joining the club where he came through the ranks, having had spells at Mbombela United, Maritzburg United and Mamelodi Sundowns, where he played for six years, before a loan stint at SuperSport United last season.

Upon signing him, Chiefs confirmed the player’s experience was key to their move for him as they feel he will be vital for them in the CAF Confederation Cup and Nabi is thrilled that the club managed to lure the midfielder to Naurena.

What does Maboe add to Chiefs?

“I think I have to say congratulations to the board, they did a very good job, they are smart with how they made the agreement [with Maboe],” said Nabi as quoted by iDiski Times.

“Maboe is an intelligent player, and we need his quality, we need him. He has a lot of experience and is coming to help us with that experience from Sundowns. And now, he’s working with the fitness coach [and will be ready] to be with us.”

Nabi confirmed that the 30-year-old is still building up his fitness before he is cleared to play but remains confident that Maboe, and all the other signings, will be unleashed soon.

“We also have a lot of players who are yet to get a chance to help the team – [Ethan] Chislett, [Etiosa] Ighodaro, [Asanele] Velebayi and [Luke] Baartman. For sure, at the right time, we will introduce them to make it easy for them,” he added.

Maboe came through the ranks at Chiefs before joining Mbombela and then Maritzburg after which he linked up with Sundowns in 2018, playing with the Brazilians for six years, before a loan to Matsatsantsa last season, where he made 25 appearances in all competitions.

Chiefs have started the new season well, winning four and drawing one, to stay joint top of the table with Sekhukhune United and will hope that the 13-capped Bafana Bafana midfielder makes them even stronger.
