Percy Tau Transfer: Al Ahly confirm Bafana forward’s departure

Al Ahly have finally confirmed the departure of Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau to Qatar, ending speculation over the winger’s future.

Tau arrived in Doha on Thursday to begin the formalities of completing his transfer from Ahly and although his next club is yet to be made public, the Cairo Red Devils have cleared the air regarding the next chapter of his career.

Al Ahly coach Marcel Koller has now let the cat out of the bag, saying Tau will not be involved in their CAF Champions League match against Stade d’Abidjan as he has left for the Middle East country.

“The player is no longer in the team’s ranks. He has moved to one of the Qatari teams,” Koller told the media on Friday as quoted by iDiski Times.

How much will Tau earn in Qatar?

Tau is reported to be headed to either Qatar SC or Al-Gharafa and will earn between $650,000 and $750,000 (R12 million and R14 million) in the first six months of his two-and-a-half-year deal.

The winger had fallen out of favour with Koller at the end of last season with his playing time significantly reduced and has made 15 appearances this season, most of them as a substitute, and scored three goals, all in the CAF Champions League.

In total, Tau made 126 appearances for Al Ahly and scored 30 goals while providing 14 assists. He won a total of 11 trophies, among them two league titles and as many Champions League crowns.

Tau joined Al Ahly in January 2021 after being lured by former coach Pitso Mosimane following his unsuccessful spell with Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion.
