South African coach Rulani Mokwena has been appointed as the new head coach of Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC, set to take the helm for the 2026/27 season.
The move comes shortly after his departure from Libyan club Al Ittihad Tripoli.
The 39-year-old’s tenure in Libya lasted just four months. His exit was reportedly prompted by disagreements with the club’s management over transfer policies and its long-term vision, as he felt that initial promises regarding player recruitment and the overall sporting project were not being met.

Pyramids finally get their man
Pyramids FC have been long-time admirers of Mokwena, having shown interest in him for the past two years. The Egyptian club first made overtures after his successful spell with Mamelodi Sundowns and again after his time with Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco.
Following those opportunities, Mokwena chose to join MC Alger, where he led the team to the top of the Algerian Ligue 1 table before parting ways with the club before the season’s end.

According to SABC, an official announcement from Pyramids is expected shortly. Mokwena will replace Serbian coach Krunoslav Jurcic, who leaves after a successful period that included winning the 2025 CAF Champions League title and achieving domestic success.

Mokwena will face immense pressure to build on the club’s recent achievements and compete with Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Zamalek. Expectations will be high for success both in domestic competitions and on the continental stage.
The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns coach is also expected to be granted the authority to assemble his own backroom staff, a practice he has maintained throughout his coaching career.
