Mamelodi Sundowns transfers: Defender eyeing European move

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly exploring a potential European move for highly-rated young defender Thato Sibiya, following emerging interest from clubs abroad.

According to SABC Sport, indicate that the 20-year-old, considered one of the most promising talents in the Sundowns youth system, has attracted attention from overseas.

Sibiya has already gained international experience, having been part of South Africa’s U20 squad at last year’s FIFA World Cup in Chile and earning nine caps at the junior level.

Limited opportunities for Sundowns defender

The left-back was promoted to the Sundowns senior team in January and made several appearances near the end of the previous season. However, his absence from any matchday squads this season has fueled speculation about his future.

While it remains unclear if Sundowns have made a final decision, the club is said to be weighing its options regarding a potential transfer for Sibiya. This development follows the recent departure of another promising young player, Thapelo Maseko, who is set to join Danish club FC Copenhagen.

Maseko’s move to one of Europe’s top leagues was secured after a strong World Cup performance with Bafana Bafana. He is expected to undergo a medical in Denmark this weekend before signing a three-year contract.

Sibiya’s development has stalled

Sibiya could be the next young star to depart from Chloorkop, but any potential deal would hinge on the nature of the offers received and whether they meet Sundowns’ valuation.

The Brazilians had initially hoped Sibiya would follow the development path of other academy graduates like Bennet Mokoena, Malibongwe Khoza and Gomolemo Kekana by breaking into the first team this season.

For now, it appears Sundowns are assessing the interest rather than actively seeking to offload the player. With the transfer window open until September 21, the possibility of a European move for the talented defender remains on the table.
