‘They know where to find me’ – Benni McCarthy breaks silence on Kaizer Chiefs job

Amid doubts over the qualities and futures of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef at Kaizer Chiefs, Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has opened up on links to the job.

Kaze and Ben Youssef have divided opinion since being elevated from Nasreddine Nabi’s assistants to co-coaches last September with Chiefs recording mixed results this season.

However, their stock has fallen badly in the last three weeks when Chiefs were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup, CAF Confederation Cup while three straight defeats in the league have left them out of the title race as they are 11 points behind leaders Orlando Pirates.

That has seen a number of candidates proposed as possible coaches for Chiefs with McCarthy’s name also featuring prominently and he has been asked what he thinks about taking over at Naturena.

“They are happy man,” McCarthy told Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide. “But listen they are a good team, very good players. If nobody came knocking on my door, that means they are happy.”

“They are happy with what they have. Because if you come knocking on someone’s door, you approach them,” he added, revealing that he has never been approached for the job.

“There are a lot of what ifs. I have been in plenty of situations even with Orlando Pirates, very close to managing Pirates after my playing career and then nothing materialises.

Could Pirates links lock out McCarthy?

“I don’t work with what is. If they (Kaizer Chiefs) want, they know where I am. They know where to find me, they know how to make it happen. If not, a rumour is just a rumour.”

COMBACK

McCarthy, who is currently the Kenya national team coach, has made it clear that he is itching to return to club football management soon although his links to Orlando Pirates could prove to be a stumbling block when it comes to being considered for the Chiefs job.

The Bafana Bafana all-time top scorer enjoyed two trophy-laden years at Pirates, where he played a key role in their last title triumph in the 2011-12 season and some Chiefs fans might not be happy with him managing their club.
