Orlando Pirates travel to Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, March 22 looking to claw their way back to the summit of the Betway Premiership in what feels like a must-win fixture against TS Galaxy.
The Buccaneers currently sit two points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who took advantage of Pirates’ 1-1 draw against Siwelele last weekend by grinding out a 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants on Tuesday night.
However, with Sundowns preoccupied by the second leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final against Stade Malien on the same afternoon, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side have a golden chance to leapfrog the defending champions and reclaim top spot, even if only temporarily.
For Galaxy, this is a different kind of battle altogether.
Adnan Beganovic’s men are stuck in ninth place on 25 points, level with eighth-placed Golden Arrows, and their league form has been nothing short of dismal in recent weeks.

The Title Race Heats Up
It has been a season of fine margins for Orlando Pirates, who have won 15 of their 21 league matches so far and boast the best defensive record in the division with just nine goals conceded.
Those numbers tell the story of a side built on solidity, but Ouaddou’s team have a nagging problem that could cost them dearly in the closing stretch: goals.
Pirates registered 34 league goals heading into this weekend, which is respectable enough on paper, but a series of underwhelming attacking displays have allowed Sundowns to seize the initiative at exactly the wrong time.
The draw against Siwelele was a case in point.
/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-za%2F2026%2F02%2FOswin-Appollis-Orlando-Pirates.jpg)
Pirates created enough chances to win that game comfortably, but goalkeeper Ricardo Goss produced an 11-save masterclass that left Ouaddou comparing him to a “messiah” in his post-match remarks.
Before that, the Buccaneers needed late goals to see off both Polokwane City (2-1) and Richards Bay (2-0), with Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa doing just enough to keep the title dream alive.
Those tight results underline an uncomfortable truth: Pirates are grinding rather than gliding towards the finish line.
Galaxy’s League Woes
TS Galaxy’s Betway Premiership form has fallen off a cliff.
Their 1-1 draw at Stellenbosch on March 14 ended a run of five consecutive league defeats, but even that result only lifted them to one point from their last six league outings.
Beganovic has been honest about the reasons behind the slump, admitting that juggling league and cup commitments has drained his squad both physically and mentally.

The Rockets are through to the Nedbank Cup semi-final, where they face Milford next month, after pulling off a memorable 2-0 upset over Sundowns in the last 16 thanks to goals from Siphamandla Ngwenya and Junior Zindoga.
That result proved Galaxy are capable of competing at the highest level on their day.
Whether they can replicate that sort of intensity in the league, after such a draining spell of fixtures, is the big question heading into Sunday.
Home and Away Records
Mbombela Stadium has not been a fortress for Galaxy this season, and while they have picked up a handful of wins at home, their overall record there has been inconsistent.
Pirates, by contrast, have been strong on the road throughout the campaign, which is part of what has kept them in title contention despite losing to Sundowns 2-1 at FNB Stadium last month.
Ouaddou’s players are well-drilled enough to handle hostile away atmospheres, and with 48 points from 21 games, they are averaging more than two points per match across all fixtures.
Head-to-Head Record
The two sides have met 11 times since 2021, all in the Betway Premiership, and the record sits firmly in Pirates’ favour.
The Buccaneers have won six of those 11 meetings, while Galaxy have claimed three victories and two matches ended in draws.
The reverse fixture earlier this season was a comfortable afternoon for Pirates, who ran out 2-0 winners at Orlando Stadium on September 30, 2025.

Evidence Makgopa opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Masindi Nemtajela was brought down in the box, before substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa headed home deep in stoppage time to seal the points.
Galaxy barely threatened that day, with goalkeeper Sipho Chaine enjoying a relatively quiet evening outside one sharp one-on-one save to deny Mory Keita late on.
Interestingly, though, Galaxy have won all three of their victories in this fixture at their own home venues, while Pirates have never lost to the Rockets when hosting at Orlando Stadium.
That home advantage factor is worth keeping in mind.
The last five meetings have tended to be low-scoring affairs, with under 2.5 goals landing in each of those games.
Team News and Predicted Lineups
TS Galaxy
/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-za%2F2026%2F03%2FJunior-Zindoga.jpeg)
The biggest blow for Galaxy heading into this one is the suspension of Victor Letsoalo, who picked up a fourth yellow card of the season in the 1-1 draw with Stellenbosch.
Letsoalo has been an important figure in their attack, so his absence opens the door for Mory Keita to start in the central striker role, with Mpho Mvelase likely to slot in behind him.
Beganovic is expected to stick with the same defensive core that steadied the ship at Stellenbosch, anchored by Igor Salatiel and Kamogelo Mahlangu at centre-back.
Junior Zindoga, whose confidence will be sky-high after his Nedbank Cup heroics, should start on the left side of the attacking midfield.
Seluleko Mahlambi is likely to occupy the right wing, with Mlungisi Mbunjana and Tshepo Kakora forming the double pivot in central midfield.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Eliezer Ira Tape; Lentswe Motaung, Igor Salatiel, Kamogelo Mahlangu, Solomon Letsoenyo; Tshepo Kakora, Mlungisi Mbunjana; Seluleko Mahlambi, Mpho Mvelase, Junior Zindoga; Mory Keita
Orlando Pirates

The big talking point for Pirates is the form of their strikers.
Evidence Makgopa has shown flashes of quality this season but has been far from prolific, while Yanela Mbuthuma has not scored in his last six appearances across all competitions.
Makgopa is expected to start regardless, given the significance of the fixture.
The good news for Ouaddou is that Sipho Mbule appears to be back in the fold after coming off the bench against Siwelele, though he is more likely to be used as an impact substitute again on Sunday.
Tshepang Moremi deserves his place in the starting eleven after scoring in both of his last two starts, while Relebohile Mofokeng, the PSL Player of the Month for January/February, will again be the creative fulcrum behind the front line.
Oswin Appollis completes the attacking trident and has been one of Pirates’ most consistent wide players all season.
In defence, Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema should continue at centre-back, with Deon Hotto at left-back and Kamogelo Sebelebele on the right.
Thalente Mbatha and Masindi Nemtajela have formed a solid partnership in central midfield and are likely to retain their places.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Sipho Chaine; Kamogelo Sebelebele, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Lebone Seema, Deon Hotto; Thalente Mbatha, Masindi Nemtajela; Oswin Appollis, Relebohile Mofokeng, Tshepang Moremi; Evidence Makgopa
Star Players Compared
Mofokeng has been the standout performer. Four goals and four assists since the turn of the year make him the form player in the Betway Premiership.
Mofokeng is the clear difference-maker between these two squads, and Galaxy will need a plan to stop him if they are to get anything from the game.
The 21-year-old has been in devastating form, scoring three goals and providing three assists in a single three-match spell earlier this year before adding further contributions in subsequent outings.
Zindoga, meanwhile, has been Galaxy’s brightest spark in the cups, but replicating that form in a league fixture where the stakes are different will be his challenge.
The Managers
Abdeslam Ouaddou (Orlando Pirates)
/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-za%2F2026%2F02%2FAbdeslam-Ouaddou-Orlando-Pirates-1.jpg)
The Moroccan was appointed ahead of the 2025/26 season as a replacement for Jose Riveiro, who departed to join Al Ahly after a trophy-laden three-year spell.
Ouaddou, a former Moroccan international who earned 68 caps for the Atlas Lions, brought a wealth of experience from his playing career across several European leagues.
His coaching philosophy at Pirates has centred on defensive discipline and quick attacking transitions, a system that has yielded 48 points from 21 league games.
The 46-year-old has spoken passionately about the title race, saying his players are prepared to “die on the pitch” to deliver the club’s first league crown since 2012.
The biggest knock on his tenure so far is a lack of cutting edge in the final third, but the results have been there more often than not.
Adnan Beganovic (TS Galaxy)
/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-za%2F2024%2F11%2FIMG_6199.jpeg)
The Bosnian took charge of Galaxy in November 2024 after the shock resignation of Sead Ramovic, who stepped down live on television following a draw with Stellenbosch.
Beganovic had served as Ramovic’s assistant for two years, and the transition was designed to ensure continuity for a club that was bottom of the table at the time of his appointment.
The 42-year-old, who holds a UEFA Pro License, has since steered Galaxy to mid-table safety and into the Nedbank Cup semi-final, which represents genuine progress.
His league record this season is modest, but he has been open about prioritising the cup, admitting he is “ready to sacrifice some points if it means reaching a final.”
That honesty will not reassure Galaxy supporters desperate for league points this weekend.
Tactical Preview
Both sides are expected to set up in a 4-2-3-1, which makes the battle in central midfield absolutely crucial.
Pirates’ double pivot of Mbatha and Nemtajela offers a blend of energy and passing range that should allow the Buccaneers to control possession in the middle third.
Against that, Galaxy’s Mbunjana and Kakora will be tasked with disrupting Pirates’ build-up and stopping the supply line to Mofokeng, who tends to drift across the attacking line looking for pockets of space.
Galaxy’s best route to goal will be on the counter-attack, similar to the approach they used so effectively in the Nedbank Cup win over Sundowns.
/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-za%2F2025%2F10%2FTshepang-Moremi-Orlando-Pirates-1.jpg)
Zindoga and Mahlambi have the pace to exploit any gaps left by Pirates’ full-backs when they push forward, and if Beganovic can get his team set up to absorb pressure and break quickly, there is a chance they can catch the visitors out.
Pirates’ vulnerability, if there is one, comes from their full-backs pushing high up the pitch.
Hotto and Sebelebele both like to get forward, and when they do, the space behind them can be targeted by quick, direct runners.
However, the more likely scenario is that Pirates dominate possession and probe patiently, looking for moments of individual quality from Mofokeng, Appollis, or Moremi to unlock a stubborn Galaxy defence.
Ouaddou’s side have been guilty of creating chances without taking them in recent weeks, and their ability to convert on Sunday will be the deciding factor.
Betting Tips and Predictions
The under 2.5 goals angle is particularly appealing in this one.
Galaxy will not come out and attack Pirates openly, knowing that the visitors’ pace on the break would punish them if they leave space.
That means a patient, possession-heavy game from Pirates and a compact, low-block approach from Galaxy, which tends to produce tight scorelines.
This has 1-0 written all over it.
Pirates are too disciplined to concede to a Galaxy side that has lost its scoring touch in the league, and while their own attacking output has been a concern, the talent of Mofokeng, Moremi, and Appollis gives them enough to find a breakthrough.
Ouaddou will demand nothing less than three points from his squad, and with Sundowns otherwise engaged, the opportunity to reclaim top spot is too good to waste.
A narrow, gritty Pirates win feels like the most likely outcome in Mbombela.
