Siphiwe Tshabalala tells Kaizer Chiefs what new coach must bring

Kaizer Chiefs legend Siphiwe Tshabalala has outlined what the new coach at the club must align with once he is finally appointed.

Chiefs are in the market for a new coach after parting ways with co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, who guided them to third place in the just-concluded season, their best finish in six years.

A number of coaches are already being linked to the club among them Belgian Sven Vandenbroeck, Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy, veteran Pitso Mosimane and Golden Arrows boss Manqoba Mngqithi.

Tshabalala, who spent 11 years at Chiefs and won nine trophies, among them two league titles, says the new coach must align himself with the vision and values of the club and not come to do away with what the ‘Khosi Nation’ believes in.

Tshabalala on what new tactician must have

“I hope they [new coach] will understand the philosophy as quickly as possible but as I said before, the most important thing when it comes to the philosophy and identity, the coach must have the buy-in from the club not the other way round,” Tshabalala told the media.

“If you have a buy-in from the club, the coach will present his own philosophy, his own plan and if he does not find success in that, he is going to leave and whoever comes in, they are going to change and bring their own philosophy so there won’t be progress in that regard.

“But it is the [philosophy of the] club, you know, these are the values of the club. This is the identity of the club [and] you work on that,” added the Bafana Bafana legend, who made 344 appearances for Chiefs, scoring 55 goals and adding 85 assists.

Failed coaching appointments from Chiefs

Chiefs have not found success with their recent coaching appointments as they are yet to win the PSL since 2015 with Nasreddine Nabi ending their 10-year wait for silverware in 2025, when he guided them to the Nedbank Cup.

However, Nabi still finished ninth, the club’s second season out of the top 10, but Kaze and Ben Youssef looked to be getting them back on track until their stay was brought to an end.

Chiefs coach will hope that the next coach fits the bill and can handle the size and expectations of the club as they look to challenge for honours in 2026-27.
