Attention shifts to Morocco on Saturday July 5, 2025 when the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) takes centre stage with 12 teams set to grace the tournament.
Among them are some of Africa’s top players who will look to light up the 15th edition of WAFCON. Afrik-Foot looks at the key predictions for the tournament:
Predicted Winner: Zambia

Zambia’s explosive front line, led by Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, makes them the team to beat. After third place in 2022 and a historic 2023 World Cup debut, the Copper Queens are poised to go all the way.
Finalist: Nigeria

The record champions had a poor 2022 campaign by their very high standards as they ended up fourth but that was down to an early injury to superstar Asisat Oshoala, which ruled her out of the rest of tournament, and the fact that they had an aging squad.
However, the Super Falcons have regrouped and are ready to reclaim their spot with stars like Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Michelle Alozie and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie set to play a key role with a likely place in the final this time around.
Team to Watch: South Africa

The reigning champions are back with a vengeance. Banyana Banyana, led by veteran coach Desiree Ellis, remain a formidable force. With stars like Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe, South Africa’s blend of experience and flair could see them defend their crown or at least reach the final.
Best Player: Ghizlane Chebbak (Morocco)

Ghizlane Chebbak, the heartbeat of Morocco’s midfield, is expected to dazzle again on home soil. Her vision, leadership, and set-piece prowess make her a strong contender for Player of the Tournament, having played a key part in their run to the 2022 final.
Top scorer: Barbra Banda (Zambia)

Banda’s pace, power, and finishing ability make her the most feared striker on the tournament. Expect her to lead the scoring charts if Zambia goes deep.
Dark Horse: Senegal
Senegal’s disciplined defence and rising stars like Mama Diop could see them upset more established teams. A semi-final run isn’t out of the question. A 3-0 win over Algeria in a warm-up match is a strong statement ahead of WAFCON 2025. It suggests Senegal are arriving in Morocco with momentum and confidence.
