Was Shalulile denied a chance to break Nomvethe’s record? Cardoso justifies decision

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns played to a goalless draw in the Premier Soccer League game that was staged at the FMN Stadium on Wednesday night.

The defending champions came into the match hoping to hand the inform Amakhosi their first loss of the ongoing campaign. However, the Glamour Boys played quite well, eventually getting a point despite having some good chances to collect maximum points.

Masandawana struggled to break down Chiefs' defense, which has so far not conceded a goal. It explains why some fans were looking forward to seeing Peter Shalulile, who has scored 10 goals in 17 games against the Soweto giants, get his chance. He has scored 129 matches the same as Siyabonga Nomvethe, meaning he is just a goal shy from breaking record.

Surprisingly, it was Lebo Mothiba who came on in place of Iqraam Rayners, as Shalulile ended the night warming the bench. Coach Miguel Cardoso has since explained why he did not consider the Namibia international.

‘We don't reject no one'

“Peter will have opportunities for sure, the question is what kind of game you are playing, and depending on the kind of game we are playing, Peter will be used for sure. Peter is a player who in short spaces he is fantastic when the team is high to play short spaces, play in the box, he knows very well how to read the game,” he told the media.

S”o, that is the Peter we are going to use, Peter and everybody in this group is very valuable for us, we don’t reject no one and we are just going to manage the right player, moment, and occasion.”

The Portuguese has further opened up on another tough game coming against Stellenbosch, “Another tough game, beautiful team. I think it will be important to recover, see how; assess well the players, see who is able to go for the fight.

“Stellenbosch has more than 24 hours; they played yesterday. I think with this spirit, we are much closer to winning, much closer to win a match like this one and the one we're going to play in Stellenbosch,” Cardoso concluded.
