Zitha Kwinika discloses what is behind Kaizer Chiefs’ good form

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika has opened up about what has contributed to their good run of form this season.

Chiefs have experienced a fine start to the season with four wins and a draw while they remain the only team yet to concede so far in the PSL.

Nasreddine Nabi’s team face Sekhukhune United on Tuesday and can move top of the table with a win at the FNB Stadium.

Kwinika, who has been part of the good defence, playing their last three games, says the team is benefiting from their pre-season tour of the Netherlands as well as a great work ethic from everyone.

“It has been a journey, it has been a ride so these are things you experience as a footballer for you to probably get better,” Kwinika told the media on Monday.

“You may be need to go to the outside world and come back as a better individual and maybe for us now preparing for the season going to the Netherlands, get a bit of experience, play with proper or good teams will help us.

“I think even now there are signs of improvement. Football is a journey and for some of us, we have certain roles to play. Sometimes it is not mainly about being in the field but I have a role also to play behind the scenes.”

The 31-year-old defender is one of the longest-serving Chiefs players, who has also had stints at Chippa United, Bidvest Wits and Stellenbosch FC, and is using his experience to help not just the rest of the squad but also integrate the new signings to ensure the standards are maintained.

“When I am not playing, help the guys and team. So sometimes, when I am not in the field, I have another responsibility which is pushing the guys from within,” he added.

“It is mainly about personality. At the end of the day, it is not about me. It is about the team and group so some of us have the experience, we went out and understand how the environment works so it is important to bring the boys back and try to show them certain things.

“Someone will come [to ask] about the culture and what not and I can share stories about where I have been while other boys have not experienced that so it is upon me to integrate them and try to show them how things are done.”

Kwinika will likely make the starting XI again against Sekhukhune but he has a big battle on his hands for a starting berth in defence after Nabi had preferred youngster Aden McCarthy to partner captain Miguel Inacio, before  his injury, while it is still uncertain how the coach will shuffle his pack when Rushwin Dortley returns from an injury.
