One-cap Super Eagles striker on the scoresheet in EFL Championship

Super Eagles striker Josh Maja opened the scoring as West Brom cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory over Portsmouth in the Sky Bet Championship on Sunday.

Maja’s goal came just 53 seconds into the match at Fratton Park, giving West Brom the perfect start to what would become a dominant display.

The Nigerian striker, who earned his only Super Eagles cap in 2019, latched onto a perfectly timed cut-back from Tom Fellows, finishing emphatically to give the visitors an early lead.

Maja’s goal was his fifth of the season and he also has an assist as his fine form at the start of the season continues.

Alex Mowatt added to Maja’s early strike with two goals, sealing the win in the 51st and 92nd minutes, as the Baggies continue their impressive start to the season.

Maja's performance was solid throughout, recording 36 touches and completing 79% of his passes (15/19).

He managed two shots on target and one off, while also contributing with a key pass, despite having three shots blocked by the Portsmouth defence.

Although Maja struggled in duels, winning just two of seven ground duels and one of four aerial challenges, his early goal was key to West Brom’s victory.

The striker was substituted in the 80th minute, replaced by Lewis Dobbin.

Another Super Eagles player, Semi Ajayi, started the game for West Brom and was solid defensively, though he was booked in the 43rd minute, he helped his side keep a clean sheet in the game.

West Brom cemented their spot at the top of the Championship table with 13 points from seven games.
