Latest Super Eagles recruit Akor Adams humiliates Barcelona, fires warning to Benin & Lesotho

Super Eagles duo Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke poured salt on Barcelona’s wounds as Sevilla cruised to a surprising 4–1 victory at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Sunday afternoon.

Adams, who received his first call-up to the Nigeria national team on Friday, scored Sevilla’s fourth goal of the game after being set up by compatriot Ejuke. The strike capped off a commanding performance from the hosts, leaving Barcelona reeling from another disappointing outing.

The former Montpellier forward has now recorded two goals and one assist in six La Liga appearances this season, helping Sevilla climb to sixth place in the table.

Adams, who will join up with the Super Eagles squad in South Africa ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, was introduced in the 61st minute to replace Isaac Romero. The 25-year-old made an instant impact, finding the net within half an hour of his introduction.

How did Super Eagles newbie Adams perform against Barcelona?

In his 29-minute cameo, Adams registered one goal, one shot on target, one blocked effort, and completed his only dribble. He also made 15 touches and finished with 40% passing accuracy.

Having previously represented Nigeria at under-20 level, the Sevilla number nine will be hoping his sharp form earns him a place in the matchday squad when the Super Eagles face Lesotho. With Cyriel Dessers sidelined through injury and Tolu Arokodare struggling for goals, Adams appears the most likely candidate to deputise for Victor Osimhen.

The Super Eagles face an uphill task in their bid to reach the 2026 World Cup. Eric Chelle’s men currently sit third in Group C on 11 points, three behind leaders Benin and South Africa, with only the group winners guaranteed automatic qualification.

Nigeria must first beat Lesotho away on 10 October and then overcome Benin in Uyo four days later to reach 17 points and keep their qualification hopes alive.
