Ademola Lookman update: Atletico Madrid reveal extent of Super Eagles star’s injury after tests

Spanish La Liga club Atletico Madrid have issued an update on Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman following medical tests to determine his fitness status, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigerian forward appeared to have suffered a setback during Atletico Madrid’s penalty shootout loss to Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Before his substitution, he was one of the standout performers for Los Rojiblancos, providing a reliable outlet in the final third while he was on the pitch.

His forced withdrawal sparked concerns for Atletico Madrid, as Lookman has been one of the club’s most impactful attackers since arriving in the January transfer window. So far, he has contributed seven goals and four assists in 17 appearances for the Spanish side.

To determine the severity of the issue, he underwent an MRI scan on Monday morning. While earlier reports suggested the 28-year-old might have suffered an adductor injury, the club has now clarified the extent of the damage.

On Monday morning, following Lookman’s medical evaluations, Atletico Madrid confirmed that the Super Eagles star has not suffered a serious injury; rather, he is experiencing muscle discomfort.

However, the club intends to manage the forward with “maximum caution to avoid the risk of a formal injury.” Consequently, he will follow an individualized recovery plan, training separately from the rest of his teammates over the coming days.

As a result, there is no definitive timeline for his return to full team training. Lookman will continue to work alone until his condition improves.

This recovery period is not expected to last long, given that he remains in good physical condition. Lookman is known as a resilient player with an impressive fitness record, which means he should return to action shortly.

Nevertheless, Atletico Madrid will be desperate to have him fully fit for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Arsenal next week.

Also, at the international level, Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle can be confident of having him available for Nigeria’s friendly games against Poland and Portugal in June.
