Ademola Lookman transfer: 3 reasons Atletico Madrid must reject bids for Super Eagles star

Published on by

Ademola Lookman could leave Atletico Madrid this summer barely five months after joining the Spanish club, following reports that they could consider offers for the Nigerian forward, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Super Eagles star only arrived from Atalanta in February 2026 in a deal worth an initial €35 million plus performance-related add-ons. Lookman was at the time only the second Nigerian in the club’s history. The former RB Leipzig winger signed a contract running until June 2030 and was expected to become an important figure in Diego Simeone’s attack.

Despite scoring four La Liga goals and contributing crucial strikes in both the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League, reports suggest the 28-year-old has found it difficult to fully adapt to Simeone’s demanding defensive system.

With Atletico looking to rebuild after ending the 2025/26 campaign without a major trophy, the club is reportedly willing to listen to offers between €50 million and €60 million. Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe are among the clubs monitoring the situation, while Premier League sides Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool have also been linked with the Nigeria international.

However, Atletico may be making a costly mistake if they allow Lookman to leave so soon. Why?

Atletico are already facing major attacking uncertainty

The Madrid club could enter the new season without two of their most influential attacking players.

Antoine Griezmann’s departure has already removed arguably Atletico’s most reliable creator and goalscorer in the club’s entire history. At the same time, Julián Álvarez continues to attract interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal, creating uncertainty around another key member of Simeone’s frontline.

In such a situation, selling Lookman would leave Atletico needing to rebuild almost their entire attack within a single transfer window.

The Nigerian has already shown he can produce decisive moments in big competitions. He scored important goals in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League during his first few months at the club. Keeping him would provide continuity and reduce the risk of starting from scratch in attack.

Ademola Lookman’s versatility solves several tactical problems at once

One of Lookman’s biggest strengths is his ability to operate in different attacking positions.

During his career with Atalanta, Leicester City, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Nigeria, he has played successfully as a left winger, second striker and central forward. That flexibility is particularly valuable for a manager like Simeone, who frequently adjusts his tactical setup depending on the opposition.

If Griezmann and Álvarez are unavailable, Atletico would need players capable of filling multiple roles across the frontline.

Lookman already offers that solution. Rather than spending time and money searching for separate specialists, Atletico have a proven performer who can adapt to several attacking positions while maintaining a high level of productivity.

Replacing Lookman could cost far more than keeping him

Although Atletico could receive between €50 million and €60 million for Lookman, finding a replacement of similar quality may prove significantly more expensive.

The summer transfer market is notoriously inflated, especially when clubs know a team has money available to spend. If Atletico sell Lookman after potentially losing other attacking stars, rival clubs will understand that Simeone urgently needs reinforcements.

That situation could drive transfer fees higher for players who have not yet matched Lookman’s achievements.

The Nigerian arrives with an impressive record, including his standout performances for Atalanta in Serie A and the Europa League, before moving to Spain. He is already familiar with Atletico’s dressing room, training methods and competitive demands.

Selling him now would force Atletico to gamble on another expensive signing who may need months to settle. Retaining Lookman would not only preserve proven quality but could also save the club millions in an increasingly unpredictable transfer market.
