Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is set to lead the line for Atletico Madrid when they host Deportivo A Coruna at the Estadio Metropolitano tomorrow.
A sixth consecutive LaLiga victory would lift Diego Simeone’s side within five points of Barcelona, with El Clasico scheduled for the following afternoon at the Camp Nou.
The home side arrive in near-perfect domestic form, five LaLiga wins in a row, 12 goals scored, only two conceded, against a Deportivo side that is back in the top flight after eight years away but has not won in their last five league matches.
They must make do without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who scored five goals in his first seven appearances before picking up an injury that has kept him out since.

Form and Context: Five wins vs Five without victory
Atlético Madrid have been the most reliable force in the Spanish top flight over the last month, collecting victories in all five of their most recent league fixtures.
A 3-0 win at Real Sociedad, a 4-0 win at home to Osasuna, a 2-1 win against Real Madrid in the Madrid derby on September 20, a 2-1 win at Deportivo Alaves, and a 1-0 win at Espanyol on October 17.
That run includes 12 goals scored and only two conceded, with three clean sheets, and it places Simeone’s side second in La Liga on 22 points with seven wins, one draw and one defeat from nine games.
Their home form has been equally disciplined: three wins and a draw from four Metropolitano fixtures.

Deportivo’s story is different in almost every respect. Their first two league matches gave a misleading impression.
A 3-2 win at Villarreal in their top-flight return and a 3-1 victory over Valencia at Riazor, both excellent results which suggested Antonio Hidalgo had put together a side capable of competing at this level from the first minute of their return.
However, Aubameyang, the man responsible for five of those goals and two assists, has been absent since, and without him Deportivo have drawn three and lost two of their last five LaLiga games, scoring five and conceding seven.
They have also not kept a single clean sheet on the road this season, with all four away matches producing goals for both teams.

Head-to-Head: Atlético Madrid vs Deportivo A Coruña
Saturday marks the first LaLiga meeting between these clubs since April 2018, over eight years, with Deportivo’s lengthy absence from the top flight meaning the historical record has been frozen for nearly a decade.
The only confirmed meeting between the two sides in the past five years came in the Copa del Rey on January 13, 2026, when Atletico won 1-0 at Riazor, keeping the pattern of recent encounters firmly in favour of the Madrid club.
Over the past 14 meetings between both sides, Atletico Madrid have secured 10 victories, with four draws in the remaining fixtures.

Captain Koke and central defender Cristian Romero are both ruled out for Atlético, while Lee Kang-in is a doubt with a physical complaint.
Robin Le Normand is available, but Simeone has spoken of a cautious approach after the Frenchman conceded two penalties in recent outings.
Morten Hjulmand’s red card against Stuttgart does not carry into LaLiga competition, and he remains available.

The Managers: Diego Simeone and Antonio Hidalgo
Diego Simeone
The Argentine has been in charge at Atletico Madrid since December 2011, which makes him one of the longest-serving managers in European football’s big five leagues.
His record in that time includes two LaLiga titles (2013/14 and 2020/21), two UEFA Champions League final appearances (2014, 2016), and a reputation built on defensive organisation and transition play that remains the team’s dominant identity.
The only live debate in his camp this weekend is at centre-forward, where Jonathan David has failed to score in any of his five LaLiga outings, while Julian Alvarez, who came off the bench to score in Champions League action at Stuttgart on Tuesday, courtesy of a Lookman assist, is pushing for a starting role.

Antonio Hidalgo
Hidalgo was appointed Deportivo head coach in June 2025 and delivered promotion at the first attempt, finishing the Segunda Division season with 77 points, securing the title with a 2-0 win at Valladolid in May 2026.
The opening two league games of the current campaign, those wins over Villarreal and Valencia, appeared to vindicate both the appointment and the squad he assembled.
The test facing him at the Metropolitano is the stiffest of his top-flight career to date: travelling to one of the continent’s best-organised sides with his two first-choice forwards unavailable and no wins in five weeks.

Tactical Preview: Atlético Madrid vs Deportivo
Simeone sets up in a 4-4-2 with Lookman and Baena providing width from the right and left respectively, dropping into midfield to press but driving forward quickly once possession is recovered, the transition pattern that has produced goals against better sides than Deportivo this season.
For the Super Eagles forward, the likely duel is against Deportivo right back Navarro, and if Lookman can get past or behind him early, the central defensive lane occupied by Gimenez and Loureiro will be stretched to cover width as well as depth.
Gimenez brings a specific subplot worth noting. The Uruguayan is on loan from Atletico and will face the club that holds his contract, which means his performance in the air and in one-on-one situations will be under Simeone’s direct assessment for future planning.
/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.afrik-foot.com%2Fen-ng%2F2026%2F10%2Fimago1071286228h.jpg)
The most significant tactical problem for Deportivo is the absence of Marc Casado, the Barcelona loanee who operated as the engine of their pressing structure from the double pivot.
Without Casado, Villares and Amatucci must do the same defensive covering work but lack his ability to press high and turn loose balls into quick transitions, which means Atletico’s build-up from Oblak through the centre-backs is likely to proceed with far less sustained pressure than Deportivo would prefer to apply.
Deportivo’s most realistic route to a goal would come from a set piece: with Gimenez and Loureiro as their best aerial threats, a well-delivered free kick or corner is the clearest alternative to the open-play threat that Aubameyang and Eddahchouri used to provide.
