The Greek side will be gunning for all three points as they look to get their hopes of making the knockout rounds back on track.

Real Madrid and AEK Athens Form & Context

Real Madrid arrive on a run of six straight wins in all competitions, which includes away victories at Roma, Barcelona and Racing Santander.

José Mourinho’s side have beaten Inter 2-1, Roma 4-3 and RB Leipzig 4-1 in the league phase, which leaves them fourth in the table.

The Racing Santander game showed the pattern, with a Kylian Mbappé penalty after 11 minutes, a Jude Bellingham goal on 21 and the Diomande volley on 36 putting the visitors 3-0 up before half time.

Mbappé, the France striker, has scored in all three league-phase games and reached 100 goals for the club in his 116th appearance, with only Cristiano Ronaldo, on 105, quicker in the modern era.

Bellingham’s goal at Racing Santander took the England midfielder to 50 for the club.

AEK are back in the Champions League for the first time in eight years as Greek champions, but they beat LASK and then lost at Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City.

AEK have scored exactly one goal in each league-phase game, through Stavros Pilios, Răzvan Marin and Lovro Majer.

Domestic form has dipped as well, with a cup defeat at PAOK and a 2-0 loss at Panathinaikos on November 1 leaving AEK fourth in the Super League, seven points behind the leaders.

Luka Jović knows Real Madrid well, having played for them from 2019 to 2022 before joining AEK on a free transfer in August 2025, and he had no shot on target in the derby.

The Allwyn Arena is where AEK are most dangerous, since six of their seven games there this season have produced more than 2.5 goals, and the exception was the win over LASK.

AEK Athens vs Real Madrid Head-to-Head

The two clubs have met four times, all in UEFA competition, with one win each and two draws, and the latest meeting was a 2-2 in Madrid on October 22, 2002.

AEK won the first leg of the 1985 UEFA Cup tie 1-0 at home before losing the return 5-0, and they drew 3-3 at home in the 2002 group stage, so they have never lost at home to Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have won just once in European away games at Greek clubs, the 4-3 at Olympiacos last season, with five draws and two defeats, but a record this thin says little about 2026 and none of the tips below rely on it.

Team News & Predicted XI

Federico Valverde is back in the Real Madrid squad after a hamstring problem, but Aurélien Tchouaméni will not play and Arda Güler has been left out, probably as a precaution.

Vinícius Júnior is serving a four-match ban in La Liga only, so he is free to play in Europe, where he has not yet scored in three appearances, and Mourinho has said he likes and needs the Brazilian.

Mourinho has also said everyone will play in the busy schedule, with Valencia to visit on Saturday, so changes to the side that started at Racing Santander are possible.

AEK are without João Mário, who is in hospital with pneumonia, and Lazaros Rota is a doubt after coming off at half time in the derby while a virus moves through the squad.

Thomas Strakosha has recovered from a wrist injury, although Alberto Brignoli, 35, has played all three league-phase games and is predicted to keep his place.

The Managers

Mourinho, 63, returned to Real Madrid on a three-year contract announced on June 11, replacing Álvaro Arbeloa after a spell at Benfica and a first stay at the Bernabéu from 2010 to 2013.

Marko Nikolić, 47, took over at AEK in June 2025 from CSKA Moscow, clinched the Super League title on May 10 with a 2-1 win over Panathinaikos in stoppage time, and holds a contract to June 2029.

AEk Athens vs Real Madrid: Tactical Preview

Neither side dominates the ball in this competition, with AEK averaging 43.7% possession and Real Madrid 48.7%, so the game should be decided in transition.

Real Madrid have scored first in five of their last six games, which puts pressure on an AEK defence that cannot afford to concede early.

Bellingham will play between the AEK midfield pair and the back four in the 4-2-3-1, and Milán Vitális and Marin must close that space while Jović and Varga take on the Ibrahima Konaté and Antonio Rüdiger partnership.

On the flanks, Denzel Dumfries and Diomande face Pilios and Koïta, while Vinícius and Álvaro Carreras meet Rota, if he recovers, and Majer.

The defences are the weak points, as Real Madrid have conceded in four of their last five games while AEK have shipped 13 goals in their last five and kept one clean sheet, against Panetolikos.
