AFCON 2027 dates revealed: Why Nigeria’s Super Eagles are early favourites

Published on by

Uncertainty around the exact timing of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) is beginning to clear, Afrik-Foot reports.

This comes after fresh guidance from organisers in East Africa suggested the tournament could be played between June and July next year.

The competition, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, has already been confirmed for 2027 by the Confederation of African Football. However, questions had remained over whether it would follow the recent pattern of January tournaments or return to a mid-year schedule.

Uganda’s Local Organising Committee has now offered the clearest indication yet, revealing that planning is being done on the basis that the AFCON tournament will run from June 19 to July 18, 2027.

In a statement, officials said: “That the tournament shall run for one month from 19th June 2027 to 18th July 2027.”

While this timeline is yet to be officially confirmed, it is significant. A summer tournament would align with the European off-season, meaning clubs would be less affected and players would arrive fresher, without the mid-season fatigue that has shaped recent editions.

The last three tournaments were staged between January and February, largely due to weather conditions in host countries. A return to a June-July calendar could mark a shift back to a more traditional window, while also easing long-standing tensions between clubs and national teams.

Attention will now turn to how ready the host nations are. Uganda says it is already working across multiple sectors to prepare for the competition, while Kenya has paid its hosting fee and is accelerating stadium upgrades, transport systems and security arrangements to meet international standards.

AFCON 2027: Why Nigeria will be among the favourites

As the tournament begins to take shape, Nigeria’s Super Eagles already stand out as a strong contender.

The Super Eagles have quietly built one of the most balanced squads in African football. The defence recently received a big boost following the addition of Rangers’ Emmanuel Fernandez and Trabzonspor ace Chibuike Nwaiwu. The quality in the goalkeeping department has also been raised following FIFA’s approval for Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo’s request to change association from England to Nigeria.

The Super Eagles attack is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous on the continent, led by stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, who combine pace, movement and clinical finishing.

At the last tournament in Morocco, Nigeria were the highest-scoring side, after showing their ability to break down even the most organised defences.

Under coach Éric Chelle, the team has developed a more disciplined structure, blending attacking flair with defensive stability. That balance was evident at the 2025 AFCON, when the Super Eagles progressed deep into the competition and secured a third-place finish.

There is also a sense of continuity and experience. Players such as Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey provide stability, while a new generation continues to emerge, giving the squad both depth and energy.

Nigeria’s recent record in the competition adds to their case. The three-time champions have consistently reached the latter stages, including a runners-up finish in 2023 and a bronze medal in 2025. That consistency, combined with their current form and squad depth, makes them one of the teams to watch.

With the proposed summer schedule likely to favour well-prepared sides, Nigeria could arrive in peak condition and with a clear ambition to win the title for the first time since 14 years.
