Goals from Elias Saad, who netted a brace, and Nigerian forward Dapo Afolayan, gave newly-promoted St. Pauli their first victory of the season: a commanding 3-0 win over SC Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion on Saturday.
After enduring a tough start to the season with three losses and a draw, St. Pauli were determined to bounce back. Saad opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Afolayan doubled their lead just before half-time, confidently converting a left-footed shot from the centre of the box.
Saad then wrapped up the scoring in the 72nd minute with his second of the match, sealing a well-deserved victory for St. Pauli.
Despite the team’s early-season struggles, the win offers hope as they aim to climb out of the relegation zone.
Afolayan off the mark in Germany
Afolayan had been impressive in the previous match against RB Leipzig, though he was unable to find the back of the net.
This time, his perseverance paid off, with his goal proving to be a milestone moment in his Bundesliga journey: his first not just in Germany's top flight, but in any top-flight league.
Across the 90 minutes, Afolayan registered one goal, had 31 touches, and completed six out of nine passes (67%). He made four dribble attempts, with only one proving successful, and won four of 12 ground duels and one of five aerial duels. He also lost possession 12 times, committed four fouls, and was fouled twice.
Despite these imperfections, Afolayan's influence was undeniable, contributing significantly to his side’s first triumph in the Bundesliga this season.
