Super Eagles defender Ola Aina has opened up about his ultimate ambition with Nigeria’s senior national team.
The Nottingham Forest full-back, who has been a key figure in the Nigeria setup, is determined to help the team achieve success on the continental or world stage.
In a recent interview, Aina expressed his optimism about the potential of the current Super Eagles squad, believing they have the talent and drive to win a major tournament, be it the World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
For him, representing Nigeria is not just an honour but also a significant responsibility, given how many Nigerians dream of wearing the famous green and white jersey.
Trophy aspiration a driving force for Super Eagles
Aina went on to describe playing for the national team as a privilege, emphasising that many aspiring footballers across Nigeria share the same dream.
“It’s a privilege to play for the Super Eagles. It’s a dream for a lot of Nigerians. To be selected is a privilege, so I’m always happy.
“I want to win a trophy with the national team, whatever trophy, World Cup or Africa Cup of Nations. I think winning a trophy with the Super Eagles and with this team that we have now will be the best thing,” he said.
At 28, the versatile defender is no stranger to close calls with glory. He came painfully close to winning a trophy during the last AFCON, where Nigeria lost in the final to host nation Cote d'Ivoire under the guidance of coach José Peseiro.
As the Super Eagles prepare for their crucial 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya, Aina's ambition will undoubtedly fuel their drive to reach the competition proper in Morocco.
