Super Eagles hopeful Tolu Arokodare delivered a sensational performance on Sunday afternoon to inspire KRC Genk to a 2-0 victory over Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League.
The Nigerian striker played a starring role, contributing a goal and an assist as Genk solidified their position at the top of the league table.
Anderlecht arrived at the Cegeka Arena in formidable form, riding the momentum of four consecutive wins and an unbeaten run since October.
But Arokodare proved the difference-maker, breaking the deadlock in the 30th minute with a composed right-footed finish from a precise Zakaria El Ouahdi cross.
The 23-year-old wasn’t done, though. Midway through the second half, Arokodare turned provider, setting up Konstantinos Karetsas for Genk’s second goal following a swift counterattack.
Arokodare’s season and legacy
The goal marked Arokodare’s 11th of the league campaign, putting him just one behind Anderlecht’s Kasper Dolberg in the race for the Golden Boot.
This impressive tally has also propelled the lanky forward into the top ten Nigerian scorers in Belgian league history.
With 25 league goals in just two seasons, the Genk striker has now surpassed Super Eagles legend Stephen Keshi, who remains the highest-scoring Nigerian defender in Belgium with 24 goals.
Topping the all-time Nigerian chart are notable names such as Joseph Akpala (90 goals), Paul Onuachu (79), and Tosin Dosunmu (68). With Arokodare’s current form, he could soon challenge those at the summit.
A complete performance
Beyond his goal contributions, Arokodare’s all-around display was pivotal to Genk’s win. The forward played 87 minutes, registering 39 touches and completing 15 of his 20 attempted passes (75% accuracy).
His offensive prowess was evident with six total shots, including two on target, though he also missed two big chances.
Arokodare created one big chance, delivered four key passes, and won seven of his 12 duels, including an impressive five out of six aerial battles.
Defensively, he contributed three clearances, highlighting his work rate on both ends of the pitch.
The victory extends Genk’s lead to four points over second-placed Club Brugge, who have a game in hand. With Arokodare in red-hot form, Genk look well-positioned to maintain their dominance as the season progresses.
