Feyenoord have stepped up their interest in Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez after sending scouts to watch him in action for Rangers, Afrik-Foot reports.
The 24-year-old centre-back has enjoyed an impressive first season in Scotland, and his performances have attracted the attention of several top clubs across Europe.
Per reports, Feyenoord representatives were present during Rangers’ thrilling 6-3 win over Falkirk in April, where Fernandez once again showed his strength and composure in defence. Falkirk manager John McGlynn confirmed that several clubs were in attendance, including Feyenoord and Bayer Leverkusen, although he joked that the attention felt like a big moment for his own team.
Fernandez, who was born in London and represents Nigeria at international level, joined Rangers from Peterborough United in 2025. Since then, he has quickly become a key player. Standing at 1.98 metres tall, he is strong in the air, difficult to beat in one-on-one situations, and comfortable on the ball.

Feyenoord are not alone in their pursuit. Top clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are also keeping a close eye on him. Rangers, however, are in a strong position. Fernandez is under a long-term contract until at least 2029, meaning any deal is likely to be expensive. Reports suggest the Scottish club could demand a fee between £20 million and £40 million.
This growing interest presents a big career decision for Fernandez. A move to the Premier League would offer global exposure, while clubs like Feyenoord and Borussia Dortmund could provide a clearer path to regular European football and development.
Feyenoord: A defensive rebuild under Van Persie
Feyenoord’s interest in Nigeria Super Eagles centre-back Fernandez is closely linked to changes expected in their defence this summer. With experienced centre-back Gernot Trauner nearing the end of his contract, the Dutch club are preparing for a new phase at the back.
Under manager Robin van Persie, Feyenoord’s 2025/26 season has been a story of highs and lows. They started strongly, going unbeaten in their first nine league games and briefly setting the pace in the Eredivisie.

However, their form dipped during the winter months, and they also struggled in Europe, exiting early from continental competitions.
Despite that dip, Feyenoord have remained competitive domestically and are currently second in the league, keeping them on track for Champions League qualification. The club’s board has shown faith in Van Persie, believing his attacking style can deliver long-term success.
One of the main concerns, though, has been defensive consistency. Injuries and a lack of depth have exposed weaknesses, especially against quick counter-attacks and set-pieces. This is where Fernandez could make a real difference.
His height and physical presence would improve Feyenoord’s ability to defend crosses and long balls. Just as importantly, he is comfortable playing out from the back, which suits Van Persie’s system that relies on defenders starting attacks.

Fernandez also offers versatility, capable of playing in different defensive setups. That flexibility could be vital for a Feyenoord side looking to compete both domestically and in Europe next season.
However, signing him will not be easy. With strong competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and Rangers determined to keep one of their best players, Feyenoord face a tough challenge.
The coming months will be crucial, not just for Feyenoord’s defensive rebuild, but also for Fernandez as he decides the next step in what is quickly becoming a very promising career.
