Arsenal vs Fulham: Preview, team news, & tips as Chukwueze and Bassey chart Gunners’ downfall

Published on by

The Emirates Stadium hosts one of the most consequential Premier League fixtures of the season this Saturday, May 2, 2026. Arsenal, top of the table with 73 points from 34 matches, take on Fulham in a game that could extend their advantage over Manchester City to six points before the second-placed side play Everton on Monday.

The backdrop is a heavy European one. On Wednesday, the Gunners drew 1-1 in Madrid against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, Viktor Gyokeres converting a penalty before Julian Alvarez levelled from the spot. Less than 72 hours later, Mikel Arteta must keep one eye firmly fixed on the title race.

This fixture has heavy Nigerian presence, as five players of NIgerian origin could feature. Arsenal have three players of Nigerian origin – Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze. However, all of them chose to play for the Three Lions of England.

On the other hand, Fulham have three Nigerian stars – Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey. But unfortunately, Iwobi will miss this one because of an injury. But the five Nigerians that will be on parade are all quality players and could provide an exciting flavour to the game.

Arsenal Form and Title Race Context

Arsenal arrive at Saturday’s fixture with relief and three points from their most recent league outing. The 1-0 win over Newcastle last week was ground out — one goal, no comfort — but it ended a run of four consecutive defeats across the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. It is the kind of result that convinces no one, but accumulates: with 73 points from 34 matches, the Gunners hold top spot three clear of City.

The picture at home tells a different story. Arsenal have conceded only 11 goals at the Emirates Stadium all season in the Premier League. In 17 home matches, goalkeeper David Raya has been beaten barely more than once per game on average, with William Saliba and Gabriel rarely yielding space in front of him and Declan Rice sweeping up what little escapes through the middle.

The factor most in the hosts’ favour this Saturday is precisely Fulham’s offensive frailty on the road. The Cottagers have found the net in only two of their last seven matches across all competitions, managing just four goals in that period. Ryan Sessegnon’s first half goal secured a 1-0 win over Aston Villa, offering some tactical relief, but the deeper problem remains: away from Craven Cottage, Marco Silva’s side have gone three consecutive matches without scoring.

In the table, Fulham sit 10th, two points behind Brighton in sixth. A European place is still mathematically possible, but the visitors face a formidable statistical obstacle on Saturday: the Cottagers have never won a Premier League away match against the side that led the division on that particular day. That record spans generations and has no exceptions.

Ligue 1 postponed Paris Saint-Germain’s fixture between their two Champions League quarter-final ties against Liverpool. The Premier League did not extend the same courtesy to Arsenal.

The Gunners play this Saturday with less than 72 hours of recovery since Madrid, with no concession from the English football calendar. Arteta deliberately left Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze on the bench in Spain precisely for this reason. Both are expected to start at the Emirates.

Arteta left the Estadio Metropolitano furious with the officials. After VAR prompted Dutch referee Danny Makkelie to overturn a penalty he had already awarded for a challenge on Eze by David Hancko, the Arsenal manager described the decision as “completely unacceptable at this level.”

Speaking to TNT Sports, Arteta added: “There is clear contact. You make the decision, you cannot overturn that decision when you have to look at it 13 times. It’s the wrong decision.” That anger is likely to fuel a more determined atmosphere at the Emirates, where Arsenal produced one of the finest away performances in the club’s European history to leave the Spanish capital unbeaten.

For Fulham, the only viable route is a disciplined defensive block, rapid counter-attacks and a goal from Raul Jimenez. The 34-year-old Mexican striker has scored two goals in his last four appearances against Arsenal — by some distance the most favourable record any visiting player brings to this fixture. Of the other 10 players in Fulham’s likely starting lineup, none has scored against the Gunners this season.

Arsenal vs. Fulham Head to Head: Gunners Chasing Historic Home Record

Across 60 meetings between these clubs, Arsenal have won 39 times. Fulham have claimed eight victories. The numbers speak plainly enough, but the most telling detail is the domestic record: in 32 league matches played by Arsenal at home against Fulham, the visitors have never once won.

That is 24 Arsenal victories and seven draws, with no defeats — the longest unbeaten home record of any club against a specific opponent in the history of English league football.

The most recent meeting took place in October 2025 at Craven Cottage. Arsenal won 1-0 through a Leandro Trossard goal, finished from close range after a corner kick flick-on by Gabriel.

Notably, Fulham did not register a single shot on target that afternoon. Before that, Arsenal had won 2-1 at the Emirates in April 2025, with Mikel Merino opening the scoring. The only recent result that breaks from the pattern was a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage in December 2024.

At Arsenal, the primary fitness concern is Kai Havertz. The German midfielder suffered a muscle injury in the win over Newcastle and was left out of the squad for Madrid, leaving him in serious doubt for Saturday. Jurrien Timber, with a groin problem, and Mikel Merino, with a foot complaint, remain sidelined.

Ben White has also come under tactical scrutiny following inconsistent recent displays, with Cristhian Mosquera presenting as an alternative option at right back.

Riccardo Calafiori returned to the bench in Madrid after an illness and is expected to reclaim his left back spot, pushing Piero Hincapie to the bench. Saka and Eze were used as substitutes in Spain and are both expected to start on Saturday.

For Fulham, Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is ruled out with a thigh injury. Sessegnon, who scored the only goal against Aston Villa, came off in the 81st minute with an unspecified physical complaint and is a doubt.

Silva expressed caution over the left back, given his troubled injury history. Antonee Robinson is ready to cover if needed. Kenny Tete and left back Kevin, who has an ankle problem, also remain unavailable.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Raya; Mosquera, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Odegaard, Zubimendi, Rice; Saka, Gyokeres, Eze

Predicted Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Castagne, Andersen, Bassey, Robinson; Berge, Lukic; Wilson, Smith Rowe, Chukwueze; Jimenez

The Managers

Mikel Arteta has been in charge at Arsenal since December 2019, and this is the season in which his squad has come closest to a full complement of talent operating simultaneously.

With Gyokeres resolving the centre-forward problem the club had lacked for years, Martin Zubimendi stabilising the midfield and Eze added in the summer, Arteta is working with the most complete squad of his tenure. The fact that he is simultaneously contending for the Premier League title and a Champions League final place is the clearest evidence of that.

Marco Silva has been at Fulham since June 2021 and transformed a side fighting relegation into one competing for European qualification. The Portuguese manager finished last season with 54 points, a record haul for the club in the Premier League.

Saturday could represent one of the final chapters of his time at Craven Cottage: Silva is widely reported as the leading candidate to take charge of Chelsea, with a decision on his future expected in the coming days.

Tactical Preview: Arsenal vs. Fulham

Arsenal are expected to set up in a 4-3-3, with Saka and Eze wide and Gyokeres through the centre. The midfield trio of Declan Rice, Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard provides defensive cover, build-up quality and late runs from the right half space, while Calafiori pushing forward from left back adds width and an extra passing option down that side.

Fulham are likely to defend in a compact 4-2-3-1, using Sander Berge and Sasa Lukic as a double pivot to neutralise Arsenal’s pressing game. Emile Smith Rowe in the pocket between the lines is the team’s creative link, while Jimenez operates as the lone reference point up front.

Set pieces deserve particular attention. In October, Arsenal’s only goal at Craven Cottage came from a corner: Gabriel’s flick-on, Trossard converting at the back post. Fulham did not manage a shot on target in that match. With a low defensive block likely again on Saturday, Arsenal’s set-piece repertoire could again prove decisive.

The post-Madrid fatigue is the most legitimate argument in Fulham’s favour. If Arteta manages minutes and Arsenal’s pressing intensity drops, the Cottagers may create more than usual. But 11 goals conceded in 17 home matches is not a product of fortune — it is the result of a consistent, well-drilled defensive process.

Arsenal vs. Fulham Score Prediction

🎯 Score Prediction
Arsenal 2-0 Fulham
Arsenal possess the most resilient home defence in the league and face a Fulham side that has not scored away from home in three matches. The quality of Gyokeres, Saka and Eze should be enough to win comfortably without reply.
  • David Raya has kept 16 clean sheets in the Premier League this season — more than any other goalkeeper in the division, and three more than he managed across the entirety of last season.
  • Arsenal are unbeaten in 32 league home matches against Fulham: 24 wins, seven draws, no defeats — the longest unbeaten home record of any club against a specific opponent in English league football history.
  • Fulham scored in only two of their last seven matches across all competitions, managing just four goals in that period. Away from home in the Premier League, the club have gone three consecutive matches without a goal.
  • In the most recent meeting between the clubs, in October 2025, Fulham did not register a single shot on target at Craven Cottage. Arsenal won 1-0 with total control from the first minute to the last.
